    India bans Chinese telecom equipment

BEIJING - A top Chinese industry group urged the Indian government to provide a level playing field for Chinese IT firms after India decided to ban telecom equipment from China citing security reasons.

The China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products, of which major Chinese equipment makers Huawei and ZTE are members, said it has received complaints from telecom equipment makers and has contacted government agencies over the issue.
"We've required our member companies to cooperate with the Indian government's new rules, but we hope India creates a fair and transparent environment for Chinese telecom firms and avoids applying discriminatory measures that are targeted only at Chinese firms," it said.

In a recent order the Indian government reportedly told mobile operators not to import any network equipment manufactured by Chinese vendors, citing security reasons.

The chamber's statement said if this was the case, India would have violated the World Trade Organization's rule on national treatment.

It is a smear campaign, and also a pathetic attempt to reduce the trade deficit. However, by doing so Bharat is hampering its modernization efforts as all other options are more costly, less secure, and come with more strings attached.

Well even the Pakistani govt. banned Chinese mobile handsets. The problem is that the Chinese manufacturers were not following international guidelines and many handsets had invalid or same IMEI numbers that was causing a security hazard.

    even pak should ban it.
their handset comes without IMEI or duplicate numbers.
Moreover, terrorists are no fool. they know how to use it.

there are so many terror attack in pak and its surprising that they still didn't ban it.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

India imposes indefinite ban on Chinese telecom equipment
    ================================================== =====

    * New Delhi retaliates against ‘attempts’ by Beijing to steal sensitive government data from defence and foreign ministries
    * Import ban has been clamped on all foreign companies, as banning imports from China alone would have violated WTO regulations

    By Iftikhar Gilani

NEW DELHI: In retaliation for Chinese attempts to hack secret information in India since last year and to steal sensitive government data from the defence and foreign ministries, India on Saturday imposed a ban on import of telecom equipment from China for an indefinite period.

Four months after asking the Indian cellular phone operators to secure clearance of telecom equipment from foreign companies citing security concerns, they were specifically told this week to cancel all import orders they had placed with the Chinese companies.

According to industry sources, the Telecom Ministry had lifted restrictions on most foreign manufactures that were imposed in December but importers were told that the imports from China would not be allowed due to security concerns. The Home Ministry suspected that the Chinese were installing gadgets in offices of the Indian government to spy on telephone calls and Internet communication.

According to the Telecom Ministry sources, the import ban was clamped on all foreign companies, as banning imports from China alone would have violated the World Trade Organisation (WTO) regulations that prohibited singling out any particular country for such actions. “We have, however, cleared the foreign firms one by one after scrutiny and stopped only those that have some security complications,” the sources said.

In December, the operators were told to submit their plans to import telecom equipment to the ministry, which cleared some of them and but stopped others after verifying the identification of the suppliers with the help of the intelligence agencies.

Most of the cellular phone operators were worried as the foreign companies they were dealing with came under the government’s scanner. They were also concerned because of the fact that only these foreign companies could meet the demands of the consumers, as no Indian firm had the technology to manufacture the telecom equipment. Officials of the Telecommunication Department justified the government’s move to ban Chinese imports so that the equipment could not be misused. But they dispelled the impression that all Chinese imports would be banned and said allowing imports from certain country was considered on a case-to-case basis. They said that all such deals need to cleared from the Home Ministry.

The department had displayed on its website the new security clearance rules to prevent foreigners from indulging in spying in the name of maintaining their equipment installed in the Indian cellular phone operators. It said “operation and maintenance of telecom networks should be entirely done by Indian engineers” and “dependency on foreign engineers should be minimal” within two years from the purchase of the equipment from the foreign companies.

The mobile operators were also required to urge their foreign manufacturers to transfer their technology within three years of a sale to enable the production of the equipment and the software. The operators not enforcing technology transfer were threatened with criminal prosecution.

UT Starcom, a California-based company, was put on the black list this week directing one of the biggest private cellular phone operators to cancel its orders with the company. The operator was verbally told that most of the company’s engineers and managers were Chinese and do business from China and that was the reason the government could not allow any deal with them.

The government-run BSNL was also told this week to cancel one of its biggest orders for telecom equipment from Huawei Technologies of China. The Indian companies prefer deals with suppliers in China because of the price factor, as they say the Chinese sold equipment at almost half the price that other foreign manufacturers demand.

The Chinese companies, including Huawei Technologies and the ZTE Corporation, were actively involved in construction of India’s telecommunications network since 1999 and had even established their factories in India.

    Fake chinese iPhone

    Fake chinese N95

Its better to buy nothing than to buy a chinese mobile. Its horrible. All chinese mobiles have the same interface and software. Just copied bodies and false names like Nokia and Sony.
And they have no IMEI number and sometimes fake ones, which can be used by terrorists and kidnappers to do anything without being tracked ever.

No so good security wise isn't it???

I wonder why chinese products always take the illegal approach.
