Exclamation China harasses more than 200 people ahead of Nobel ceremony

China harasses more than 200 people ahead of Nobel ceremony

More than 200 people have either been blocked from travelling, arrested, or put under house arrest by the Chinese government ahead Friday's Nobel Peace prize ceremony, according to Amnesty International.

The Chinese Communist Party continues to be furious at the award of this year's peace prize to Liu Xiaobo, a 54-year-old writer who is serving an 11-year prison sentence for inciting subversion. Mr Liu was the co-author of Charter 08, a petition for political reform in China.

Officials have begun a sweeping campaign to stop all mainland Chinese from either attending the ceremony in Oslo and from voicing any support for Mr Liu. "We have at least 200 cases [of suppression]" said a spokesman for Amnesty. "These are just the ones we can prove. There are probably far more."

A list circulating in China yesterday provided a summary of the extent to which China has gone to quash any support for Mr Liu.

Compiled by Liu Shasha, a fellow activist who was brutally tortured in a Beijing detention centre last year, the list provides a near day-by-day account of abuses by Chinese officials.

For example, the list stated: "On October 28, Guo Xianliang was arrested for distributing leaflets about Liu Xiaobo in Guangzhou.

On October 30, Mo Jixu and Wen Kejian were detained in Hangzhou and Mo Jixu was escorted back to Sichuan. A woman named Huang Yaling laying flowers at the Norway Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo was questioned.

Chen Zhaohua was interrogated. A website called 1984BBS was ordered to close. The head of it, Zhang Jianmen was questioned and put under house arrest".

China has blocked several Chinese citizens, including Ai Weiwei, the artist whose work is currently on display at Tate Modern, from leaving the country, fearful that they would attend the Nobel ceremony.

However, it has also emerged that a naturalised Australian citizen, Zhang Heci, had been detained at Shanghai airport for 24 hours and then sent back to Australia after stopping in China on his way to Oslo.

Ai Weiwei blocked from leaving China

Mr Ai, 53, said he was about to board a flight for Seoul in South Korea when he was stopped by Chinese officials at Beijing airport. He said he had been informed that allowing him to leave China was a risk to national security.

He said he believed he had been stopped because Communist party officials suspected that he might try to attend the Nobel Peace prize ceremony on December 10 in Oslo.
    ...
Mr Ai, who is currently exhibiting an installation in the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern in London, said he had not planned to attend the Nobel ceremony. "I was going to Seoul because I am a curator for the Gyeongju Biennale," he said. "Then I was flying onto Berlin and the Ukraine for other art events."

Only one of the Chinese guests invited to attend the ceremony by Mr Liu's wife, Liu Xia, has been able to confirm his attendance, with scores of supporters and fellow activists confined to house arrest since the prize was announced at the beginning of October.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but China has the largest percentage of people on Earth who support their Government. No one else even comes close.

Still hawking that eh? Btw, it does seem that my argument that there might be a price to be paid for opining against the state seems to have suddenly got some pretty strong legs courtesy the Chinese government.

If you don't like the numbers in that article, take it up with the Washington Times and the Pew Research Center, they were the ones who took the poll.

    Yeah you wish.

Keep wishing, but here are the facts. China has NO active armed insurgencies. India has MANY armed insurgencies.

Kashmir insurgency, tribal Maoist insurgency, North-East insurgency, etc. The only one here going "fuzzzzz" here, is the Indian Union... not the CCP.
