Pakistani spies trace Fazlullah to Kunar province

US, Afghan officials not interested in moving against him

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan spy agencies have traced the hideout of the fugitive Swat Taliban chief Maulana Fazlullah in an eastern Afghan province and want international forces stationed there to get him out.

Officials in the intelligence agencies told The Express Tribune on Sunday that Fazlullah, also known as Mullah Radio, was hiding in Kunar province of Afghanistan, bordering Pakistan’s Chitral district and Bajaur tribal region.

They said top security operatives have tipped their Afghan and American counterparts about the presence of Fazlullah in a district controlled by one of anti-Pakistan commanders but there hasn’t been any action so far.

“We know exactly where he (Fazlullah) is in Afghanistan…we have told Americans and Afghans to get him. But they hardly seem to be interested in moving against him,” said one security official based in Peshawar.

The assertion speaks of a ‘deep mistrust’ between US and Pakistani intelligence outfits, which otherwise are allies in the war on terror.

The revelation comes days after Fazlullah featured in a video addressing his would-be suicide bombers and warning that his Taliban would take the valley they once ruled back from security forces.

On Saturday Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain’s son was killed by unknown assassins. Taliban claimed responsibility for the murder.

It was Fazlullah who once warned Hussain of dire consequences.

All these incidents indicate Swat Taliban, who were flushed out from the valley in a military operation last summer, could still be a threat and might be in a position to re-launch them.

Intelligence officials said security agencies lost track of Fazlullah immediately after a military operation was launched in May last year to retake the valley from Taliban led by him.

According to them, the Mullah Radio might have crossed over the border using one of several secret routes from Swat into Upper Dir and from there to Kunar province.

One official said the intelligence outfits believe Fazlullah left Swat before the military moved into his stronghold of Ghat Peochar in upper parts of the valley, betraying his commanders.

In November last year, he rang up a Peshawar-based BBC journalist, Hai Kakar, from Kunar province of Afghanistan.

So basically, same story terrorists operating in Pakistan are sheltered by security forces operating in Afghanistan.

makes perfect sense

after all the terrorist fugitive is being protected in afghanistan given a sanctuary, while innocents are dying in drone attacks..

these americans need arse beating for their poor job there..

Send undercover agents like MOSSAD to eliminate the cockraoch

This one leg terrorist was injured during opreation Rah-e-rast , in peuchar valley but he was rescued by an unknown chopper to afghanistan. <local sources>.
This one leg terriost should b bring back to Pakistan and hanged infront of perliment house.

If we know where he is then it is no harm to use Air Power, Cruise Missile etc to hunt him down. Or alternatively, send in special forces.

Does anyone know, as to how did he manage to break free of a huge cordon and get to Kunnar in the first place? Refer to the map of Pakistan and Afghanistan prior to replying please.

he escaped because our SOME FRIENDS dont want him dead.
thats why he is well tolerated in kunar.

Fazllullah along with Pakistani and Afghani Taliban were causing trouble in Afghanistan and yesterday they even captured a district in Kunar provice, Afghan army dont have much of men and resources to control that area properly, that is not just area of afghanistan, but areas of pakistan too that the insurgents walk freely and control it.

come on Ahmed
PAkistan has full control over northern border. thats why we have cost Taliban heavy casulties.
but i fail to understand why ALLIES are not intrested in esteblishing their writ in Kunar, Nouristan and logar?
may be they want us to bleed?
at least twice we cleaned bajor and mohmand this year but talibs retreated to Afghanistan and regrouped to create trubles for us again.

If Pakistan Army has full control of the Northern border, how did he manage to cross not only Swat, but Bajaur and then the international border at Kunnar?

when he crossed we were having operation and as report says he betrayed his fellows and quitely crossed to Bajor and then to Afghanistan.

secondly he has a support base in kunar and nouristan where Punjpiri cult rules. Qari Zia ur Rehman the famous commander is based there he gave full support to Fazlullah .

they want you to blead? i dont know!! but the truth is that they are in shortage of manpower especially Afghan Army, that is why they lost the control of one of the districts. in case of Logar, the insurgents are having presence, but not control, they might have control in very far and remote areas, but the main land is not under them. and we shouldnt consuse kunar as it is mountainous region and very far from the capital. you guys have the same problem as we do, you dont have control over NW and it is almost detached from the body of pakistan, and we see the deadliest attacks come to afghanistan from that area.

If you remember it, back in those days ISPR was releasing reports that the chap has been surrounded and that he's lost his legs. Suddenly all went quiet. Please, don't insult my intelligence by suggesting that one of the top most wanted man in Swat, managed to break a cordon of not only forces involved in the operation itself. But those stationed outside the war-arena to prevent - these very leaks - from Swat to Bajaur to later the international border.

He was let go off.
