ISLAMABAD, Nov 8: Two Chinese firms, whose representatives called on President Asif Ali Zardrai on Monday, evinced interest in the construction of three major dams, raising hope for addressing the power shortage problem in the country.

One of the firms assured that finances could be provided for Kohala, Bhasha and Bunji dams, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said after the meeting, adding that both companies were ready to play a key role in the construction of these projects.

Nie Kai, vice-chairman of China Gezhouba Group Corporation, and Wang Shaofang, senior vice-president of China International Water and Electric Corporation, held separate meetings with the president.

“The CWE that has built and is operating the world`s largest hydropower project, the Three Gorges hydropower station, evinced interest in building large dams with power houses, including Kohala, Bahsha and Bunji on BOT (build, operate and transfer) basis. All the projects are estimated to produce (a total of) 14,000MW power,” the spokesman said.

He said the firm also offered to provide full financing for the projects without asking for equity from the government of Pakistan. The firm was told that the government would soon set up a sub-committee of the federal cabinet to evaluate its offer.

The water and power secretary said the government had already approved setting up of a ministerial committee that would examine all BOT proposals for building dams and hydro projects.

The president said the proposals must be examined expeditiously so that the work on hydro projects could be started without delay.

Mr Nie briefed the president about the progress made by his company on the construction of Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project and thanked the government for facilitating them in their professional pursuits.

The president said the government attached great priority to the early completion of hydropower projects, especially the Neelum-Jhelum project, not only to meet energy requirements but also to provide cheap electricity to people.

He invited the Chinese companies to consider participating in other mega projects in the country such as the Zulfikarabad city project and desilting of Tarbela dam.

ISLAMABAD – President Asif Ali Zardari has said the government will offer incentives to the builders and constructors which complete their projects before scheduled completion time.

The president was talking to China Gezhouba Group Corporation Vice Chairman Mr Nie Kai and China International Water and Electric Corporation Senior Vice President Wang Shaofang who called on him at the Presidency on Monday.

The China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE) that has built and is operating the World’s largest hydropower project – three Gorges Hydropower Station – evinced interest in building larger dams with power houses, including Kohala, Bahsha and Bunji on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis.

These projects are estimated to produce 14,000-MW power.

The corporation also offered to provide complete financing for building the projects without the Pakistani government and informed President Zardari that they had been pursuing their plans with various government departments for the last 12 months.

The president urged the Chinese companies to consider participating in other mega projects of the country such as Zulfiqarabad city project and the desilting Tarbela Dam.

The Water and Power secretary said the government approved setting up a ministerial committee to examine all such BOT proposals for building dams and hydro projects in the country.

The president advised examining the proposals expeditiously to kick off the work on hydro projects without any delay to meet the energy needs across the country. The president said that being short of energy Pakistan was stepping up search for out of box, imaginative and bold solutions to meet the country’s energy needs by all available modes.

He said Pakistan offered promising opportunities for massive investment in new sources of energy in Pakistan particularly in the development of wind, solar and hydro energy.

He said that the hydro potential of the country needed to be fully exploited and there were tremendous opportunities for the foreign investors, especially the Chinese, to step forward and invest in this sector for the mutual interest.

Nie Kai briefed the president about the progress made by their company on the Neelum-Jehlum Hydropower project and thanked the government for facilitating them in their professional pursuits.

The president said that his government was attaching great priority to early completion of hydropower projects, especially the Neelum-Jehlum Hydropower project, not only to meet the energy requirements but also to provide cheap electricity to the people.

The WAPDA chairman said early completion of hydro projects would make available 5 billion units of power in one year that would step up economic and industrial activity in the country.

Secretary General to President M Salman Faruqui, Ambassador-at-Large Khalil Ahmed, WAPDA Chairman Shakeel Durrani, and other senior officials besides representatives of the Chinese companies attended the meeting.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari Invites CTGPC for All-around Hydropower Development
August 22, Pakistan Government Official Delegation with its leader of Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari paid an official visit to China during which meeting was held between Zardari and CTGPC’s President Li Yong’an, Zardari expressed his warm welcome to CTGPC for an All-around cooperation with Pakistan government, with an view to further boost Pakistan hydropower development.

After meeting, Minister of Pakistan Ministry of Investment, Chairman of Pakistan Investment Committee, Mr. Salim and CTGPC’s President Li Yong’an signed MOU of Cooperation of Bunji Hydropower Project on behalf of each party.

Bunji hydropower station is proposed to install 20 Francis turbines and generators with total installed capacity of 7100MW, requiring to build a 180m-hign roller concrete gravity dam , power plant will be underground and the construction period lasts for 13.5 years. It is a huge hydro power plant with good development condition and resettlement will not constitute as a major problem.

President Zardari indicated that Pakistan is endowed with abundant water and electricity resources, but current hydro power installed capacity only amount to 6600MW. Vigorously promoting hydropower development not only serves the domestic demand and tariff reduction, but also generates economic profit through power export to the neighboring countries such as India, Middle Asia and Russia. Since WAPDA and CTGPC had successfully singed a MOU of Pakistan Hydropower Development Cooperation this February, CTGPC shall be committed to be fully involved and assist Pakistan in hydropower development and boosting its economic growth.

CTGPC’s President Li Yong’an reviewed Zardari’s last visit to China Three Gorges Project and briefed that CTGPC has established a panel to implement the cooperation projects in accordance with MOU. He said success in Three Gorges Project and Jin Sha River Hydropower projects indicates that hydropower development is of great importance, providing both clean and cheap energy as well as accelerating local economic and social development. Current China’s total power installed capacity is 800 million MW, among which 180 million MW are from hydropower, as the power industry restructuring, China is competitive to join international hydropower development.

Luo Zhaohui, Chinese ambassador in Pakistan, Lin Chuxue, Vice President of CTGPC and officials from related departments attended the meeting and signing ceremony.

And as far as delay is concerned the project is in clearing & grubbing stage , no body is going to put that on the web & yes they are behind schedule. Lets hope they do it in time.:china:

great news.... just let them build and run the dams. but we need to be quick in benefiting from such offers otherwise foreign firms will loose their interest
