GizmoGyan First solar energy iPad for children in rural India

Kolkata: Scientists from Singapore are all set to soon come up with the first solar energy iPad especially designed for children in rural India.
This iPad called I-Slate can be charged using solar energy thereby enabling children to have access to an electronic notepad. Krishna Palem, of Rice University stated “India’s full economic potential will only be realized with sustainable, low-cost technologies that benefit all segments of the population.”

Palem’s brainchild I-Slate is being developed at the Institute of Sustainable and Applied Infodynamics (ISAID) which is based at NTU.

Rajeswari Pingali, ViDAL president stated “The I-slate can help bring the marvels of technology into thousands of rural schools and contribute to an improved learning experience.”

NTU President Su Guaning stated “The research will not just help in the sustainability of our planet but the development of such sustainable, low-cost technologies will also help the poorer communities in the world to close the digital divide. It will be life-changing and it will help to improve lives.”

First of tell me:

What's the status of so called that Indian version i pad created to counter apple i-pad??

it was so famous in the past and then what happen?

Amazing stuff. This is the power of IT. Way to go India.

good work.

was watching a show on Nat geo today...showing how Indian Govt is preparing to trap and use the solar and wind energy with large projects for future...looked very promising.

Wow, thats genius. I wish Pakistan could've get their hands on these for the people affected my floods and Taliban.

Good stuff.

Looks simple and productive.. hope the rural folks benefit from it.

loool, its an LCD screen, bad quality one with maybe some really basic OS. The person who even used ipad and islate in the same sentence should quit their journalistic career.

It's a rip off thats what it is and should be sued for trying to piggyback on ipad's success.

It was not meant to counter iPad. Apple is a massive company that cannot be challenged by a single product. More than the features, there are a lot of other things Apple sells for, such as 1000s of apps, the brand value, the popularity, etc.

I think the Indian version can be a huge hit in India with good advertising, support and consumer education, and possibly an android OS (I'm not sure if it has that)

It's made by Singaporeans.

These things are sold in Chinese bazaars, probably you'll find something that gives high def, wifi and has 2gb of memory as well for like $100 price. People who make that are not called "scientists" as this article is doing.

Its not an innovation. Somebody might have made it earlier or might have marketed it. But the news is about how "we" made it and made available to rural folks..

Would you have said the same if this product was made available to the most rural children in Pakistan who dont even have access to electricity ? How would they care whether this product is a cheap knock off to the 1000$ ipad ? They might not even see 1000$ in their entire lives. This product is meant to educate them and improve their future. Quality does not matter. It is not designed for luxury or entertainment. It will make them want to learn and make education interesting for them.

Anyhow, I'm not too surprised on the comment, judging from where it's coming.

It's made by Singaporeans! They make this kinda stuff all the time. Maybe you're buying it and giving it for free to people. That could've been news, but clearly its being passed of as an electronic marvel and that botched up attempt with the ipad comparison... which it so is not.

its meant to be for rural India asim, I doubt those children need the latest banking apps on their Ipad so rather than wasting money on hardware and software that they wont use, make tech that accessible to them so that atleast they can get started.
