China pledges support for Pakistan

China pledged its support for close ally Pakistan on Tuesday, after the United States announced it would suspend $800 million worth of security aid to Islamabad.

"Pakistan is an important country in South Asia. The stability and development of Pakistan is closely connected with the peace and stability of South Asia," foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.

"China has always provided assistance to Pakistan, helping it improve people's livelihood and realise the sustainable development of its economy and society. China will continue to do so in the future."

US President Barack Obama's chief of staff, William Daley, announced in a television interview on Sunday that the United States had decided to withhold almost a third of its annual $2.7 billion security assistance to Islamabad.

The move has plunged relations between Islamabad and Washington -- already rocky after US commandos killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden in May on Pakistani soil -- to a new low.

But it was welcomed by India, which has long accused Pakistan of providing shelter to militant groups and has pushed the global community -- the United States in particular -- to censure Islamabad.

China, however, is one of Pakistan's closest allies and is also its main arms supplier -- a situation that India has also expressed concern about.

So america shove your bribing money:china::pakistan:

so is that means China is going to provide finical aid to Pakistan .

It would be interesting to watch how much soft loan China will be offering to Pakistan in present situation .

US is not bankrupt due to Chineses loans to US to please keep that in prespective , Americans should be very thankful to China

Verbal support is cheap, we should replace all our misplaced aid with this verbal support.

They have decided to withhold only a third of the amount, and every member here is already behaving as if Pakistan is completely independent of the aid.

While on the other hand, the Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar is threatening to withdraw troops if there's any cut in the aid.

It is all getting a little too confusing in this forum... only in this forum though.

A golden opportunity

The $800 million of aid that the Americans have decided to hold back out of $2 billion earmarked for Pakistan Army should not be taken as a punitive measure that it is intended to be. Instead, it should be treated as a golden opportunity to get out of the intricate web of Western aid, especially of the US and international financial institutions like the IMF. It might at first sight appear a tall order because of the huge amount that we owe to these institutions. However, the American aid should correctly be called only a partial reimbursement of the expenditure and losses that Pakistan bears in prosecuting the war on terror. No doubt, it is fairly substantial in commitment, but is charily delivered. If we were to coolly take into account the human and natural resources the country possesses and if we were able to manage to eliminate the corrosive disease of corruption afflicting our polity, it should not be too difficult for us to manage without these financial hand-outs that come with a lot of painful strings.

Fortunately, we have a tried and tested friend, China, to fall back upon. For any shortfall, as an unnamed Pakistani official observed in reaction to the announcement made by White House Chief of Staff William Daley to withhold the aid, we can “fill the gap” from Beijing, which has time and again expressed its readiness to help us stand on our feet. Only the hesitation of our West-leaning ruling circles has stood against the development of Pak-China relations to the great potential that they have. Another story in TheNation yesterday quoted Director General of Three Gorges Corporation of China Wang Shoofeng as assuring that it could help Pakistan raise its generation capacity by 10,000MW within the next 10 years.

Meanwhile, military sources have asserted that they should be able to continue fighting the war without the US help. We must realise that lesser reliance on the US would also facilitate our breaking free from its suffocating embrace. It has made us suffer the humiliation of an open violation of sovereignty and poses a threat to our security. It should be remembered that the cut in aid neatly fits in with the aggressive policies of President Obama. Our strong reaction to the murder of two Pakistanis by CIA contractor Raymond Davis and the clandestine nightly raid to take out Al-Qaeda chief, the arrogant and domineering posture of Secretary Clinton, Army Chief Mullen and Senator Kerry towards Pakistan, the US anger at our insistence to withdraw 100 US spies operating in the garb of trainers and the strict restriction we have imposed on the number of visas issued to US personnel – all these are manifestations of a bilateral relations threatening to break under the strain. Let us not buckle under the pressure of this onslaught and like a self-respecting nation boldly bear it and set our sights on further strengthening our ties with genuine friends like China, others in the Muslim world and beyond.

Aid seeking is weakness, we have to leave this tradition.

Not wise because this for our security to keep troops on western border. Should be something different from this threat by DM.

And the birth of another north korea is upon us. Exiled by the world......supported by China. This is really quite sad, and im not being sarcastic here. We are essentially the same people and Pakistan was once a beacon of hope and a rolemodel for all Muslim nations around the world. You had it all....and you squandered it all.

What has China actually pledged for Pakistan?

One should be categorical and not merely give bland meaningless platitudes.

As it stands, it is all hot air.

Like the usual stuff one see and hears when a foreign delegation comes - 'long historical and cultural ties' yakety yak!

China has been constructing for common goals i.e. that will be for Pakistan, and it will also be of immense value to China.

Now, if the US gives aid, will they stop that?

In other words, unless they fill the financial loss of the US not giving aid, it means, as the American say, Squat. Because, US aid or not, they will continue their projects since it assists China itself.

Note the Chinese statement
"China has always provided assistance to Pakistan, helping it improve people's livelihood and realise the sustainable development of its economy and society. China will continue to do so in the future."

Not a word about money! All it means that they will continue with their projects.

You can keep your sob story for another day.
