actually to be honest with you, i dont think he is trying to highlight the gulf in the interest of creating tensions between the two; afterall the military is part of the GoP (MoD)

it's just a question of countering those tired voices of people claiming that army "meddles" in civilian affairs; when in fact, the real toxin is civilian govt. apathy to a very serious situation --one which requires collaboration and pro-activeness....a multi-pronged approach.

it was civilians and army who helped re-take Bajaur, Swat

dont make me bring up the floods!

Thank you AZ, for that bit of levity. I needed a good joke. :D

Joke?

Well if you view it as such, then I suppose I thank you VCheng for that bit of sarcasm. :D

When was the last time anyone from the civies-thund-program-group visited any of the conflict zones?

Zero responsibility by the civilians?

No doubt, the civilians are there for that KODAK moment , looking impeccable as the Marque on the display counter.

There's merit in what you say -- but every time you say it, you just highlight the gulf between the Civilian and the military, who wins that? Pakistan?

Hain..?

Jhappian Pappian tu kar nahi saktay ab civilians ki sath?

Rest, everything had been done to carry the civilians side by side the military. During floods, faujis visited everywhere, so did the civilians because they had to get votes, but then the military never visited faked up relief camps. Also, the places where efforts were done by the military, the commanders were sitting right on the heads of their troops, we didnt see the DCOs and EDOs doing the same, shouldnt the civilian commanders had done the same?

Whenever, CM KPK visits the FATAville, the COAS or atleast the Corps Commander accompanies him, why cant the Chief Secretary KPK or anyone else could do the same when the COAS visits the area? This is not a gulf, but sheer begairiti!

Most importantly:

1-the civilian govt vetted the military operations before they were executed, so it's not like as if the military acted ultra-vires, and therefore, the civilians have the duty to support the military - Why they dont do it? It's not the gulf, BUT the indifferent attitude (towards Pakistan and the Nation) that these civilians have. In short, you can call it begairiti!

2-We all see the Sharifs, Zardaris and Altafs huffing and puffing during their speeches when they sing laurels in support if the military and their sacrifices, but i think they dont know that mouthing while standing behind the bullet proof podium is no where near going on ground and talking to the troops on ground - Why they dont do it? It's not the gulf, BUT the munafiqat that these guys have in such abundance.

P.S. One of the anti-Musharaf slogans that was common during his era was that he never visited the troops fighting in Wana and he was criticized for that. Why dont you criticize the civilians for committing the same mistake?

Xeric

I realize you don't get it and you think I'm going off on the armed forces - whereas all I was asking was who wins when uniforms and former uniforms bad mouth "bloody" civilians --- for instance I don't think anybody will say, well, Pakistan wins - or that the perception that the armed forces and the govt are on the same page -- please don't get me wrong -

Santro - I like the way think

sorry, i couldnt add "No one wins in this" at the bottom of my last post. i wanted to but i couldnt as got onto some other work amidst i was writing the post.

But the thing is that the lack of visits to the conflict zones by the civilians is NOT becuase of any gulf between the civilians or the military. It was to support this fact that i tabulated the last portion of my reply. See, the civilians support the operation, barring the (wannbie) Imran Khans. Ok, not the operations but atleast we all want the militancy to end, dont we? So when the military has the support of the Nation and the civilian govt, then how can you say that there's a gulf between the two? Had this lapse been there because of any gulf, we wouldnt have seen media, politicians, analysts and the common man supporting the operations or the idea of ending militancy (to put it mildly), but they would have outrightly rejected this idea and criticized the military for their actions (they critisize the military for running banks and DHAs, but not on this, well, not the majority, you included).

So, what's the reason for such initiatives (visiting the troops on ground etc)? i think, it's the hypocrisy and the indifferent attitude, nothing else.

Like someone once told me that how would IG Punjab know anything about Punjab when the dude has stayed almost all his life in Lahore, and how would IG Balochistan would know much about Balochistan when he had been settled in Quetta for guud (his office and service tenures)?

How many times have you seen DPOs visiting the Thanas under their command? i can vouch that they have never! i mean, how would you know what the guy sitting at Thana Rasool Nagar is doing, what his problems are, what kinda repo he enjoys in the area and how does he get his job done when you cant even locate his Thana on a District Map? Ofcourse this (visits) is not the only way to judge and take care of things, but then they are there for a reason, or else Mike Mullen could have just called the COAS, N.Sharif had just called Ciliton when Kargil Saga took place on phones etc and not visit in person.

On the other hand, what to talk of COs, Brigade Commander or the GOCs, i have seen Corps Commanders visiting and inspecting EVERY training activity that any smallest sub-unit underwent during his command. Beleive me, it;'s not easy to leave a thanda office, travel 100 or miles, traverse cross country and kacha tracks, visit the troops, eat the same dall roti that the troops would have and take tea in the same Enameled Mug that the troops use, on atleast fortnightly basis. i mean who likes to eat dust and experience the rigors of cross country traveling when you are a grade 20?

i know EDOs dont do it, they dont visits that they are supposed to supervise. DCOs would never do it, because he's has extra-curricular activities planned in their offices. Politicians would only visit those place that can make their vote-bank expand, Police Officials wont do it unless there's a bomb blast.

So it's simple, it's hud-, not any gulf.

That's all.

How about Comd 1 Corps?

too good to be true

one fine general who revived the FC and commands respect not only among his troops but from the Americans as well.

a very good speaker and interesting to listen to, he made regular appearances on international news channels when he was IGFC who were looking for someone who was coherent and able enough to construct basic sentences and convey message from the Pakistani side :)

He's a fine general. He played a significant role in get the FC to where it stands today. With quite a few successful operations under his belt, and as you put forth that he is also in the guud books of the yanks (not implying that he requires an aye from them for is career management), he's a guud choice in my very personal opinion. i have met him a few times, and every time the officer never failed to impress me. A fine gentleman!
