I'm willing to be corrected on this, and I don't know if anyone's noticed, but Gripen is the only aircraft from among the four jets that were eliminated in the MMRCA competition, that still advertises and makes a public pitch. In August, three months after Saab was among four vendors knocked out of the race, it placed an advertisement in magazines talking about cost -- a direct snipe at the high reputed price of the two aircraft the Indian government had selected for the final toss-up -- the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale. And now, just about a week before the MoD opens commercial bids, Gripen had the advertisement you see above, in magazines (I saw this one in Vayu).

This second post-elimination ad hinges on similar themes -- high technology, but not at unwieldy cost. "Leaders must also take responsibility. There can not be too heavy a price for leadership. The Gripen IN's low life cycle cost makes it a responsible leader through its lifetime."

know very well that IAF acting as a rich man's kid...
nothing can be done if parents are too lebral...

Futile.

IAF has made their recommendations. If MoD/GoI go against this decision and go with Gripen on cost issues then they are putting national security at risk and going agaist the recommendations of the professionals who have painstakingly come up with their recommendations. The MoD said, before April "down-select" they are happy to go along with whatever planes IAF recommends. The MMRCA is so huge and highly publicised it simply is too large to fail or be embroiled in a controversy. The Congress party saw what happend to them in 1980s over a few arty guns, I don't think they'd risk their future compromising this deal.

Can you imagine if we got to this stage and the Gripen was allowed back in? There would be uproar not just amongst IAF officials who made their case for Rafele and EFT but among the other 3 contenders who were down selected in April. The whole thing would have to be re tendered but most likely completely scrapped. This would cause the $hit to really hit the fan for GoI as they not only would have the legal issues with the unsatisfied parties to worry about but the political storm that would no doubt be created. Add to that the discontent from the armed forces and the serious repercussions leaving the MiG-21 in service for longer could have.

Gripen with Elta EL/M-2052 and israel's new lightening pod will be a great combination. Gripen also has the best weapon package among all the fighter jets in MMRCA. I think either we go for Rafale or Gripen, euro-fighter is way too expensive and since the developing nations themselves are reducing their purchase so as to a different fighter jet (F35) i don't really see its future, on the other hand both Sweden and France are not looking for a 5th gen fighter and so they have a definite plan for future upgrades.

Saab wanted the Israeli radar, or at least a radar co-development with them, but the US intervened and vetoed it! When you check earlier pics/graphics of the Gripen "IN" that was offered in MMRCA, you will see not only the litening pod, but also Python V, or derby missiles, which shows that they wanted to propose India an Israeli package, which not only makes the fighter better, but would have increased the chances by the political influence of Israel. But again, when we can have the same Israeli techs and weapons for our own LCA, why should we buy a foreign fighter that is similar?
Wrt to the future of Gripen...
...Sweden initially ordered 200 Gripens and then also learned that the cold war is over and their defence budget is too small, that's why they leased their own fighters to other countries at low costs and offeres us 2nd hand Gripens, or Saab 2000 MPAs as fast procurements too. The only real export customers of the Gripen are Thailand and S. Africa and the Gripen NG was offered in many competition and badly lost out, once because of technical issues, but also by the fact that it is not developed yet and that not even Sweden has a real interest in buying them is another one. Besides, Saab and Sweden are simply too small to fully back a Gripen offer like LM/Boeing and the US can, or the other Eurocanards are supported. Even if the Gripen is a good lower end fighter, fighter replacements are decided not only by air forces, but by strategic needs of a country, that's why even a country like Switzerland, that has no real need for fighters at all, will choose between Rafale and EF mainly, while the cheaper and operationally fully suitable Gripen will loose once more.
The future of Gripen is worse than the future of the EF, because it has less orders, less prospects, less support and was inducted earlier. Saab will soon have to close the production line and can't stretch it like the EF consortium did it now, by reducing the production, because all orders of Sweden and export customers will be finished soon.
The only European fighter with some future potential is the Rafale, especially when the deals with UAE and Swiss goes through, but even if not, the production of French forces alone will go on beyond 2020, a time when neither Gripens, EFs, F15, F16, most likely not even F18s will be available anymore. That makes Rafale to the only western non stealth fighter on the market by then and it suddenly it turns into a cost-effective alternative for countries that can't afford stealth fighters.

Let them pitch,no harm in letting the competitors know that lower price options are currently available to India.I'm impressed by the resilience and great attitude that Swedes display towards rejection.Much better than the French who threw a fit and wanted to pull out of Aero-India after rumors started circulating that the Rafales got the axe for MMRCA.

Are you out of your mind!? It will take another year if someone repitches again. Just let it get over. Already so many pilots have jets have been sacrificed over this pathetic delay of jets. It is easy for us to sit and comment; but just think about the family of those pilots that died due to obsolete jets.

They are pitching on magazine covers and newspaper ads,I doubt it will halt any ongoing tender proposal just because the Gripen camp is buying some ad space. Also,I think that the Swedes are looking out for sales on the Sea Gripen platform and not a comeback in the MMRCA contract.

Either ways the gates are closed now. Think about it; Admiral Verma announced that more MiG-29Ks will be added to the Naval air arm instead of a third type of jet. That closed Sea Gripen's chance. The Israeli AESA was a winning point but as soon as US stepped in, everything non-EADS went down and out. Gripen is a fine fighter jet but we need something with a longer range and more payload.

^^^ Chalta hai na,humara kya bigadega?Let them keep pitching. When the American tried to force their way back in the MMRCA with the F-35 bid,one could at least hope that the final contenders just might submit lower priced bids to keep off the competition.Same case here,India has nothing to lose in the scenario. So cheers to us eh!!!

Hope some one doesn't file some public litigation in the court staying this procurement. There are enough people in India that will do anything for their 15 min of fame.
