India’s Unlimited Defence Purchases

While the world is rapidly moving towards the idea of one world as in the cyber age, economic development has replaced the shrewd politics of the past. In these terms, states prefer welfare of their people at the cost of undue defence expenditures. Europe which learnt a drastic lesson from the two world wars, presents an ideal model by integrating the continent through the European Union. On the other side, despite criticism from various circles that India is not investing more to tackle development issues as millions remain mired in poverty; the Indian government’s unlimited defence purchases are in full swing.

there is no deep criticism from various circles, there is criticism only from those who are afraid of india's defence expansion, i live in india and hardly any political party has opposed the defence expansion here......

with a gdp of 200 billion look at their military accusations and expenditure. If they cannot buy they go for soft loans or aide money.

they should "Practice before preaching others"

The quoted example of Europe being a model for integrating the economies is not good enough.

Events in Greece, Italy, Spain, Iceland & Ireland show.

Govt has announced many schemes this month too like bringing 75% of population under food subsidy..

The draft Bill that has been made public by the food ministry seeks cover up to 75% of the rural population and 50% of urban households with a proposed monthly entitlement of 7kg foodgrain per person, at Rs. 3 per kg for rice, Rs. 2 per kg for wheat and Rs. 1 per kg for coarse grains. It also provides for cash handouts of Rs. 6,000 for pregnant and lactating women in 52 districts.

But that is something nobody wants to hear.. atleast by the haters.

the same lies not only for India but also Pakistan and China also.

Defence is much more important than anything. If India wants to buy weapons and other defence equipment we or any other nation have no right to object. It's only the Indian people who may protest against such expenses but in the end US also spends Billions of $ on so-called defence while locals are now losing jobs, and economy is declining... :D

What about Pakistan. Your economy is in worse shape, doesn't stop you guys from buying weapons. Sanctimonious much?

But then why isn't the Pakistani author talking about Pakistan? It spent $2.2 billion on nuclear weapons production in 2011 (Till Sep 2011). Pakistan has the fastest growing nuclear weapons program in the world. It spends more than 10 percent of its massive defense budget on nuclear forces alone.

According to Pakistan's Planning Commission, poverty rate has jumped from 23.9 to 37.5 percent in the last three years. The commission has estimated that in 2005 there were 35.5 million people living below the poverty line but in 2008 their number increased to over 64 million and touched 80 million by 2010! Consequently, unemployment has also increased.

But then, who's bothered? Didn't ZA Bhutto say the Pakistanis would eat grass for the atom bomb? Well, it seems Pakistan is fast nearing that threshold.

Uranium for breakfast, anyone? :P

In 2010 Pakistan had flood and it could not feed its people, economy was in Chaos but Pakistan increased their defense budget by 12% to catch up with India's increase. To compensate it, they decreased their development budget on Education, health, infrastructure, railways etc. It sounds funny when Pakistan make comment against India but don't look at their own. But those who were suffering from flood never got help.

India is having economic boom right now. Apart from these defense purchases, there is also full-proof plan to invest $1 Trillion on infrastructure projects between 2012-2017 and invested $500 billion on infrastructure between 2006-2011.

You should ask same question to Pakistan government why they increased defense budget by 12% when 24 million people were suffering from flood, poverty in increasing, deep economic chaos, Pakistan railway, Pakistan Steel Mills, Power sector are seeking much needed bailout.

Indian defense budget at 2.5% is a very modest budget of its GDP.

MUCH LOWER than pakistan which is probably spending near 4%

What makes indan budget so big is its massive GDP of $1.7 trillion nearly 10 times that of pakistan.

India is growing at 8% break neck speed compared to europe & usa who average 1% or less and are in recession.

YES INDIA HAS POVERTY but its growing massively and things will change for many more millions of poor.

I THINK SOME PAKISTANIS ARE JUST GETTING ANXIOUS AT THE SHEAR SIZE OF INDIA BUYING POWER LATELY.

But this is just a result of 20 years of huge GDP growth.

First feed the poor and then do whatever you want. India does not want to be like America. Rich are rich and poor are poor. You don't want to get trapped into Capitalism. Those of you living in India must know this reality.

In fact do you know why aerospace companies in USA have so much money to build fighter jets and the government does not have to pay debt? its cuz of the system. Rich CEOs do lobbying and that maybe the same case in India.

to counter terrorism. ( correction)

India has 7% inflation per year, barely exceeding its nominal growth rate. India's real defense budget is probably closer to 6% and rising.

I think India will go into recession in 2012 because of military overspending.
