India’s Unlimited Defence Purchases

There are many real examples, One was I think about C130J or Globe master plane where reports came that US sold other nations at low prices compared to India.

second is recent 1.5 billion deal for 22 attack apache-3 helicopters.

:woot: So your own perceptions,,,, thats great!!!! Now we are speechless......

We have to pay more because we always opt for the best a lot of customization according to our needs to be done. Thats why many a times we need to suffer a lot in procurement delays due to high altitude, hot environment fields trials and their evaluation processes.

To but the best weapons to have to paid "PREMIUM". Sadly only few country can afford it.

I think countries that spend money on purchasing from other countries are not that succesful when push comes to shove. I mean look at some of arab countries spend a lot on weapons eg iraq didnt do them much good, I know that india has spent a lot on developing on indigenous weapons system but i think indians would be better of developing their own industries

Yea true.. But our govt is pusing indigenous systems more and more in to our military. Its take some time to make another level. also not to mention more Indian pvt companies are pouring money to get a pile of cake..like TATA, MAHINDRA etc are some of the new players..
Again it will take some time to flourish internal defense industry and world class weapon produce. Unfortunately we are in a situation thanks to our beloved neighbors that Indian govt has to purchase products on urgent basis from west ..

It is very unfortunate that the above post didn't come from an Indian.

India has become the world's largest arms importer......see link below:

This is not the right way to go.

personally I think India should concentrate more on self-reliance like China......Imagine what whould happen if the countries we are importing from, stop exporting in a war scenario--this is very much possible due to world politics.............

More such projects are required.......to make India one of the top exporters(after fulfilling domestic needs of-course)
It's not good to rely on others......forever.
I think import defense budget should be decreased and that money should be used in indigenous developments.....Indians are talented enough to do research and develop cutting edge stuff.

Once you buy something from some country....you become dependent on them forever for spare parts, maintenance etc. etc..........
You can "licence-produce" them off-course.....but that is also some kind of dependency.
Instead when you develop something yourself....once it is developed, the per unit production cost becomes much less than their imported counterpart.

So import generates long-term dependency and waste of money for the importer and profit for the exporter.--nothing else i.e it doesn't aid technological advancement in any way.

That's what he implied.

Developing weapons in-house can be more costly, complex and time consuming compared to buying proven weapon systems from abroad. Generally speaking that is.

In india,
Education-free
Food:Rice@rs 1 per kg
Electricity-get solar powered lamps for free
Cooking -get solar cooker for free,or get portable bio gas plant for free.
Health-primary hospital treatment with medicine for free, expert tests @rs10 to 25

India is spending heavy expenses on defence deals and signing contract at really high prices compared to any other country. That is why many defence equipment supplier offering India to make more profit.while on other hand, India is misusing its own Tax payer 's money.

No way we don't think so, we only criticize our government on corruption, our army should get all weapons. Also this years $36 Billion defense budget is just 1.8% of GDP.

You are absolutely wrong buddy.
Developing weapons indigenously is NOT more costly.....it is only more time consuming.
Infact, it is more cost-effective than importing.
And the pros hugely outweighs the cons.

READ CAREFULLY:-
Apparently It might seem that to develop weapons, initially huge funds are required for R&D and we could avoid this cost by buying from others.
But just think, the countries which we are importing from, has also invested in R&D and they include their R&D cost in the selling price of the final product.

selling price= cost of production( R&D cost + manufacturing cost) + profit.

[So what we are gaining actually...NOTHING....the R&D cost which we think we have avoided....we are actually ending up bearing the R&D cost....and painfully in this case, we are bearing the R&D cost of other countries....so they are advancing and developing technologically and we are paying for it.]

And what we are loosing in the process.....
1. Our technological advancement slows down.....considering that we are paying for other country's R&D instead of our's.
2. We become dependent on other countries for spare parts, maintenance etc.
3. If we are able to develop the weapon indigenously then the per unit cost of production decreases rapidly due to mass production, whereas the price of imported weapons always tend to increase.
4. We can export this developed item and recover our R&D cost and also make profit.(so we make profit and also develop and advance technologically).
5. Our politicians gain one more tool for corruption (the kick-backs from foreign deals are well known)....If you want to have detailed information then you may go through post #125 from the below link..........
http://www.defence.pk/forums/india-...ter-indian-territory-dismantle-bunkers-9.html
(note:the above link is not related to the thread...I have posted it just to prove point no. 5)

So the bottomline is, in the short-run, it may seem that we can gain technological advantage quickly by importing high-tech stuff, but in the long-run we will see that we actually gained NO advantage technologically....and the country suffers hugely.
