If we want to be the regional power in Middle East we definitely need an aircraft carrier. Also if we want to be one of the most militarily powerful countries it is a must. Look at the countries with aircraft carriers:
Brazil (1)
France (1)
India (1)
Italy (2)
Russia (1)
Spain (2)
Thailand (1)
United Kingdom (1)
United States (11+9)

Even Italy and Spain got 2 aircraft carriers. Heck Thailand got one!

Edit:
@ Manuz
I guess we can acquire one by buying it or making it ourselves, Turkey is in the end one of the best shipbuilder countries in the world. It is by the way Seymour Hersh who said that, i don't know where he gathered the intel. He says that Turkey is moving from a regional sphere to an international sphere and that the excessive developments within Turkish weapons industry demonstrates this.

Objective : Landing Platform Dock Project (LPD)’s main purpose is acqusition of one Landing Platform Dock in order to meet the operational requirements of Turkish Naval Forces.

Scope : 1 LPD and 4 (four) Landing Craft Mechanics (LCM), 27 (twenty seven) Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAV), 2 (two) Landing Craft Personnel Vehicles (LCVP), 1 (one) Commander Boat and 1 (one) RHIB (Rubber Hull Inflated Boat) will be acquired

Project Model : Privately Owned Turkish Shipyard will be main contractor, also responsible for design, construction, integration and tests and final performance.

Prime/Sub Contractor : -

Contract Date : -

Status :
"Request for Proposal (RFP) document has been prepared and issued 7 Privately Owned Turkish Shipyards, Due time for proposals will be fixed 16th, May 2011 . SEDEF Gemi İnşaatı A.Ş., RMK Marine Gemi Yapım Sanayi A.Ş. And DESAN Deniz İnşaat Sanayi A.Ş. are the bidders."

SSM - Landing Platform Dock (LPD) Project

F-35B can. Although, as far as I know, we only plan to acquire "A" variant.

Quote: "The F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant of the aircraft. Similar in size to the A variant, the B sacrifices about a third of the other version's fuel volume to make room for the vertical flight system. Takeoffs and landing with vertical flight systems are by far the riskiest, and in the end, a decisive factor in design." Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And the difference in cost per plane is almost US$30M plus the B variant sacrifices a third of the fuel's volume to make room for vertical flight. I honestly think that Turkey should plan on acquiring at least on AC, it will be a neccesity in international missions.

Noone orders aircraft carrier. There is an ongoing tender process to construct a big LHD in Turkey. There are 3 contenders which one has joined to tender with a domestic design.

Amphibious Ship Projects;

-Domestic Hovercraft in feasibility phase
-Amphibious Assault Vehicles purchase

Auxiliary Ship projects

FRS ship (Domestic) in tender process
Resque and Towing vessel (Domestic) Istanbul Shipyard
Submarine Resque Mother Ship (Domestic) Istanul Shipyard
Seismic Research Ship

With all those amphibious naval projects, Turkey's strategic naval transport capabilities to intervene the problematic areas/perform huge deadly operationals with high capable and speedy amphibious ships in Aegean and Mediterranean will be boosted extremly... Additions, After those programs finished+ existing fleet, No country in this region will have such a huge amphibious fleet...

Hmmm Thats highly unlikely but it is possible, I mean if we ever want to become a dominant regional power a Aircraft carrier will be crucial. And currently we still cant make on so if we ever want a AC soon it will most likely be foreign. I think we should give it a shot at trying to acquire one of those Nimitz Class Supercarriers Now they are starting to get replaced by Gerald Ford Class. I know its a little far fetched but atleast we can say we did our best.

you are looking at this the wrong way.

Any of the carriers on the list except the russian and the american ones would be sunk easily by the turkish airforce.

A big carrier is a liability in the mediterranean. If turkey desires a blue water navy then it should get at least two carriers. But it is not the carriers that matter in the med.

I think China is producing one and they've made some massive inroads in the naval ship building industry and Turkey has some impressive weapon developments of her own...why don't they explore a possible Joint Venture with China on any probable Aircraft Carrier ?
