KABUL: Afghanistan’s spy agency said Monday that a senior foreign ministry diplomat and three other government officials had been arrested over charges of spying for neighbouring Iran and Pakistan.
The men were detained “on charges of spying for neighbouring regions” and “the arrests were made with concrete evidence”, the agency’s spokesman, Lutfullah Mashal, told AFP, speaking in English.
The spokesman refused to provide details but a senior intelligence official speaking to AFP under condition of anonymity said the men worked for Iran and Pakistan – both accused of interference in the troubled nation.
“One of them is a senior diplomat at the foreign ministry, he’s the deputy head of the Asia desk. The others are government employees in the provinces of Nangarhar (in the east) and Herat (in the west),” the official said.
The arrests were made a month ago, he said.
The official said the senior diplomat and two of the three other men were providing intelligence for the Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI), which Afghans accuse of secretly helping Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.
The foreign ministry was not immediately reachable for comment.
The Taliban, who were in power from 1996 until 2001 when they were ousted in a US-led invasion, are waging an insurgency to topple President Hamid Karzai’s Western-backed government.
The fourth person was arrested in Herat, Afghanistan’s western trading hub on the border with Iran and Turkmenistan.

That's very good news. It displays the growing capability of the afghan intelligensia......and the declining hold of ISI over the afghan establishment.

We can expect more such news in the near future.

Actually this shows capability of ISI. They had a spy right under the nose of International intellegencia. Also do you remember one indian diplomat was also spying for ISI back in 2011.

You got it backwards. Pakistan is an immediate neighbour of Afghanistan and used to exert considerable amount of influence. It is only natural that pakistani intelligence would penetrate into afghan institutions.

The important point worth highlighting is that fact that pakistani moles are beginning to get caught......despite the common traits shared by the two states.

I think they were more businessmen rather than spies. they wanted money against the info but still spies

You should not be praising any such capability, god knows how many CIA/MOSSAD/RAW is right under the nose of ISI and still doing their jobs!

They should be hanged in public!

Then who is behind all these mess in Pakistan? ISI it self? if not why can't #1 ISI control it?

TTP is behind the mess & TTP terrorists are fully backed & supported by india via Afghanistan.

And why ISI can't control it is because the border is open, US & Coalition countries have billion $$$$ funds but they don't want to build a wall on Pak/Afghan border even after 12 years. Pakistan would've been a safe place if this wall had been build.

Isn't an open border also in favor of ISI? and TTP is the worst creature of this planet!

There are no evidence of direct Indian support to TTP unlike Afghan Taliban they don't have shuras in Afghanistan or training camps.

With the influence ISI has in the bordering areas, isn't that difficult to cut all alternative routes and their links to directors/suppliers?

Why are there so many Indian consulates within your country? :disagree:

Iran should take strict action against that spy for pakistan and take it as act of war against Iran.

India does use Afghanistan against Pakistan. That is the problem here, otherwise why would we need to send ISI agents in the first place.

So they are only spying on RAW agents in Afghanistan?

Pakistan also has consulates in our country, and those Indian consulates do what ever Pakistani consulates do.
