LONDON: At 1,102 feet up and 3,858 feet across, the ambitious suspension bridge in China's Hunan province has become the highest and longest in the world.

The Anzhaite Long-span Suspension Bridge in Jishou was officially opened to motorists Tuesday, Daily Mail reported.

Work on the engineering feat started in October 2007 and the bulk of the work finished at the end of last year.

Drivers can take in the views of the Dehang Canyon as they steer their way across all 3,858 feet of the new sky-high road which links two tunnels.

The bridge, which is lit up at night with 1,888 lights, is the fourth suspension bridge to cross a valley so wide it seems to be connecting two mountain ranges, the Mail said.

Once on the bridge cars and lorries can motor along a two-way, four-lane motorway at about 50 mph. Pedestrians can also walk along it on a special walkway under the road.

The bridge is a key part of the Jishou-Chadong Expressway, a 64-km road which has 18 different tunnels that cover about half of its length.

It is hoped the bridge will help ease traffic jams which are common in the mountainous area which has narrow, steep and winding roads.

The structure is supported by a base 78 feet wide, the Mail added.

Proposed Railway bridge on Jammu-Srinagar railway line in india, on Chenab river. This will be the tallest bridge in the world with a max height of 359 m, (1178 ft) beating your Anzhaite Long-span Suspension Bridge in Jishou by a whopping 76 ft! Konkan railway is building this portion of Kashmir Railways, and the bridge is the product of KRC, Afcons, ISCON, and other prestigious organizations.

Heck, this is not even the world's highest bridge. Its ONLY the 6th highest bridge. The highest bridge in the world is the Si Du bridge in China at 496m deck height and has been open since 2009 !:woot::woot::eek::eek:

Suspension bridge over a gorge! Jeeez! A gorge could be a gazillion feet deep! :cheesy:

Such a beautiful bridge especial with light on! Must be a treat for the residents below.

That worker is something else. Awesome.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen would have been very pleased, it was a dear wish of his that China build more railroads and bridges - Americans who met him were amazed that he was mapping out railroad routes on maps of China.

tremendous achievement.....

I think the Hindukush/Kashmir/Leh and North Eastern terrains in India and the Tibetan terrain in China are one of the most treacherous in the world.

Its time the asian countries master their structural engineering know how cause its us who need it most. China has already establishing itself as infrastructural superpower and apart from Japan no other country in Asia have truly mastered engineering feat. Its time more countries like South Korea, India catch up.

Holy crap is that guy working without anything holding him? brave to say the least

Jinjilu Xianshenhe Bridge - the highway bridge connecting Shanxi Province and Henan Province
晉 濟 路 仙 神 河 大 桥

Specifications:528 feet high / 161 meters high
446 foot span / 136 meter span
Completed 2009

The bridge ranks only 93rd of the world's tallest bridges. I post it here just because of the magnificence of the design, the excellent landscape and the imaginable difficulties of the project.

Some more pix and info of the bridge hereunder:

"A spectacular new Chinese extradosed bridge that leaps between two cliffs, the Xianshenhe River Bridge is the highest extradosed bridge in the world and just one of several towering structures along the new Jinji expressway between Jiyuan, Henan Province and Jincheng, Shanxi Province. The 4-lane highway cuts through the Wangwu Shan mountain range, a formidable barrier of deep canyons and twisting rivers that forms a natural border between these two mighty provinces in north-central China.
To keep the highway as low, level and direct as possible, the Chinese engineers punched through the highest mountains with several tunnels. The two longest are located on either side of the Xianshenhe River and extend approximately 2 miles (3.2 kms) to the south and 3 miles (5 kms) to the north. Lucky for bridge fans, the highway department decided to build a scenic parking area on a precarious location between one of the tunnels and the bridge. Here you can peek over the edge of the cliff and see the entire pier and mast dropping down 690 feet (210 mtrs) to the floor of the Xianshenhe River gorge. The structure will remind many of the Millau bridge in France but the fantastic terrain and the dramatic U-shaped river bend make it a bridge crossing unlike any other in the world."

Read carefully. It's said to be the highest suspension bridge. Not that it really matters. One only builds what one needs and everything else is just icing on the cake.
