IAF targets 42 fighter aircraft squadrons (840 combat aircrafts) in next five-year plan

Bangalore, Apr 28 (ANI): The Indian Air Force has expressed to achieve the target of 42 aircraft squadron over the next five-year plan as against the current inventory of 34.

While delivering a speech at L M Katre Memorial Lecture here on Saturday, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne said: "We are more than Pakistan at this time, it's not just Pakistan what we are saying is that we need to maintain this force level at least in the 12th plan period. We will not allow it to go less then 34 and it is only in the 13th plan that we will start going up to 42," said Air Chief Marshal Browne.

The IAF chief further said that Air Force is looking forward to acquire GSAT from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) as this will help them to a very large extent
but its delivery has been delayed by a year for which ISRO was responsible.

"We have a contract with ISRO for GSAT-7A, there are some delays there but we will get a fair amount. It will meet our number of requirements but there are some delays there in the GSAT-7 in the communication side," added Air Chief Marshal Browne.

Air Chief Browne also clarified that the IAF is keen on upgrading one of the trustworthy aircraft of its squadrons, Jaguar, once the government grants the green signal to the RFP (request for proposals).

"So once the RFP (request for proposals) gets issued, then we will start working on that project. Well this will take us at least three years for the engine work to take place. There is a lot of work required on the aircraft and the engine," said Air Chief Browne.

The Jaguar, better known as the 'Shamser' in IAF's parlance, forms a sizable unit in the world's fourth largest air force.

India is the biggest Jaguar operator today, with 90 aircraft forming five squadrons. (

42 squadrons means More than 800+ Aircraft I thing...

1...Su 30MKI ............200
2...Mig 27..............100

That's list I thing

If they Grounded our Mig 27 ...the number is ok ...otherwise we got a massive amount more than 1000+ Aircrafts in combat Condition

Really has to get over that...
If they cant get over it, so cant the other side.
In any case.. this has been stated before as well. So no new news as such.

1. He was just replying to a particular question.

2. pakistan is a short term, middle term threat while china is not foolish to attack and derail its growth at the break or make juncture of its economy/nation. china's threat is of short term 2012-2017 to very long term.

3. We are just doing it all for our defense and to destroy terrorist bases nothing else.We pose no harm to any nation, people etc. other then who are doing extra hard work to harm India and Indians.

Sir it says next five year plan means 2012-17,
And i don't think we will be able to produce 272 mki, 200 lca, 100 FGFA and 126 Rafale...
It wil be difficult to maintain 800+ fighter by 2018..Yes if lca programm picks up its speed at 25-30 per/year then we will have a good chance to get around 650-700..

272 MKIs will be produced by 2017 for sure.
We don't have capacity to built 25 mkis/year, mostly it depends on HAL..
As per current numbers we r operating ~145, that means w'll have to produce ~125 in five years..
Somewhere i have heard that we r currently producing 14-15/year, building extra 10 will need some extra investment and manpower..
So all in all, 272 mki will be reality may be by 2019-20, yes with upgradation at super30 standard..

Its typical Indian media....somebody says something and they interpret something else...

We will not allow it to go less then 34 and it is only in the 13th plan that we will start going up to 42," said Air Chief Marshal Browne.
In short right now the rate of induction is slower than the rate of retiring aircrafts. In the next 5 year plan it will change and the number of squadron will start increasing towards the sanctioned strength of 42.5 squadrons...I hear it has also been increased to 45.

There's no way IAF can increase the strength of their squadron 45 in just 5 years, simply because most of the aircraft produced for IAF is built by HAL...They are one of the Defence PSUs, it like having enemy's spies...we don't need enemy when we have such compnies on whol we have entrusted the national security of our country. DRDO is out of this list (because they are pretty successful in missiles atleast)

With the kind of Babu's we have in our defence and finance department....this will remain a dream atleast till 2022.....unless utill they don't include 200 flying coffins in these 840 aircrafts.....

My Projection for 2017

268 Su30 Mki
63 Mig 29 Smt
49 Miraage 2000
40 LCA Mk1
100 Jaguar
36 Rafale [or maybe 54...]
-----
556 Aircrafts...

Rest is junk....So i don't their is any need to include them...

I think this pessimism is unwarranted, HAL is investing ALOT of money to increase capacity with new production facilities being set up for the MKI, LCA and MMRCA so these numbers are very much achievable if construction f these facilities doesn't slip. All the hard learnt lessons of old are soon to pay dividens for Indian defence aviation manufacturing. Just wait and see.

He just had to explain some things, therefore his statement. Actually most of the journalists covering the event must have been dumber than the audience. I can say that from personal experience.

Arent they all..

Certainly. The same journo has to cover Shahrukh Khan's affairs, a Defence Seminar, a Sitar Concerto and write about Global Warming. They can be confused as hell.

But as I see it, the CAS did not indulge in too much 'saber-rattling'. While seeking to display that usual 'we are strong enough to handle any thing' attitude; which is the default while in uniform. Sometimes lines can get blurred because of this.
Kya karein. :)
