What ever happened to the advanced VERA SYSTEM?

Guys does anyone know what happened with regards to the Pakistani Army evaluating the Vera surveillance system which is amongst the most advanced in the world? I remember a year or so back there was a great deal of talk on this system and that the Czech government had given the go ahead for Pakistan to lease the system for a few years as an initial try out. Since then there has been no news of what has happened. Anyone have any idea?




Australia interested in Vera radar system PRAGUE- Australia has shown interest in being shown the Czech-made passive radar Vera, Defence Minister Karel Kuehnl (the Freedom Union-DEU) said after meeting Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, according to the army server www.army.cz.
Australians are also interested in the protection against chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, Kuehnl said, adding that they would like to visit the Liberec chemical warfare battalion, which is part of NATO's rapid response forces.

Vera, produced by the company Era, is able to detect another radar's presence and determine its type without being detected itself.

It consists of three relatively small devices, placed several dozens of kilometres from each other. It can simultaneously monitor up to 200 aircraft and accurately specify their distance and altitude.

Vera is a sophisticated successor to the well-known radar Tamara.

The Czech Republic has sold Vera to the USA and Estonia, while a number of other countries have shown interest in it, too.


The latest client is Pakistan. ERA is waiting for all the required permits. It has received positive statements by the Industry and Trade, Interior and Foreign Ministries, but it is still not clear what will be the position of the Defence Ministry, whose consent is indispensable for the deal.

China and Vietnam have been rejected as bidders for the Vera system. A number of other countries, including Malaysia and Egypt, have shown interest in it.

Passive Surveillance System VERA-AP is a long-range surveillance system dedicated for ATC purposes. It is based on Time Difference Of Arrival (TDOA) multilateration principle.

VERA-AP processes SSR aircraft transponder's reply signals in Mode A/C/S and TACAN/DME interrogations.

VERA-AP provides real time Air Picture in 120° angle sector and operational range 450 km (see Picture Library).

The system consists of three Receiving Stations (left, right and central), Central Processing Station (CPS), microwave links for connection between side stations and central station, and a Situation Display (auxiliary). The three receiving stations are suitably placed in terrain on three different sites with measured co-ordinates The side stations are in distances from 10 to 70 km from central receiving station. The CPS is located together with CRS.

The system features could be augmented by implementation HW and SW modules for ADS-B processing (see VERA-ADSB). This combination should significantly improve the system integrity and the reliability of air situation data. The implementation of ADS-B to VERA-AP represents cost effective solution with minimum HW and SW modification.

In vast areas where there is no Secondary Surveillance Radar interrogation, the system could be equipped with long range Mode A/C/S selective interrogator produced by ERA, and thus ensures the air situation picture provided by VERA-AP even in such areas.

Several VERA-AP systems were delivered to the Czech Ministry of Defence. Systems are connected to the network and cover the whole Czech Republic airspace. The network has been in full service since 1996.

It was loaned in Dec 2005 but remember the army has been busy with the earthquake.....so my guess is original return date for the loaned system of 1 April 2006 would have been considerably extended so pakistan can test the thing in good time.

So my guess would be Pakistan is at the moment trying the system out.

Thanks bro I forgot the earthquake was in the same time spam as this system was being tried out. I have sought in vain trying to find press reports or anything that can shed more light as to what is going on now with the system. The army wants the system in direct response to Israel selling India a number of Aerostat balloons, equipped with phased array radars that are now permanently deployed along the border with Pakistan. But the VERA is far more advanced.
 
PAF has ordered Erieye for delivery from late 2007.

Erieye and Vera are geared for completely different tasks;

I am sure you can find enuff information on Erieye on the net....let me say this about VERA;

the unique thing about this system is that it can detech stealth aircraft...without itself being detected.....hence if it is in place.....it can and will defeat any attempts at carrying out sneak attacks on vital pakistani installations.

It can to a degree as the radar itself high-power pulsed emissions from the target which the better stealth craft do not omit. ....Early warning systems can do the same such as the Erieye and Phalcon can pick up stealth aircraft as well but the ranges will be less which may often endanger the AWACS crew. But like Bull said if you have such air craft like that coming at you there isn’t much use of detecting them early if all they are going to do is pound you....

If it is chosen to be inducted it would cover things such as ground and naval target reconnaissance, frequency activity survey and technical analysis. Of course you have the bonus of air target reconnaissance as well.

it can detect stealth aircraft with ease...and it is the reason why usa was the first customer to purchase it...since it has direct bearing on its aircraft inventory.
As far as what can be done if stealth aircraft are detected.....they can easily be shot down.......as Serbia showed......when it shot down american stealth F-117A Nighthawk. Primary means of their defence is stealth...if that blanket is lifted they are vunerable even to f7 armed with a missile (not to mention JF-17 with a BVR ).....as well as ground based missiles...which serbia used to bring down F-117A Nighthawk.
 
The passive radar was explained to me as under:


Every aircraft or missile disturbs the air and creates waves, same as a passing ship does in the water. Passive Radar detects this disturbance waves and by inference determines the type of object which caused the disturbance. Thus stealth aircraft such as F-117 and F-22 can be detected.

What is surprising is that Czecks, a country not famous for advanced technology were able to make it and USA bought it.
 
The company also explained that it wasn't even certain that Pakistan is still interested, but that if permission is granted to market the ASDD-01 in Pakistan, it would have to build an ASSD-01 that could be taken there for testing. If Pakistan was satisfied with the results of the test, production on its order would begin. In 2003 Pakistan expressed interest in buying six radar sets. It is unlikely that the radar sets would be ready before 2006. ERA officials said Pakistan has already signed contracts, worth roughly 1.7 billion US dollars for a more powerful airborne surveillance system ERIEYE. According to ERA officials, the Swedish system incorporates both active and passive technology. ERA officials explained that if Pakistan were to buy the ASDD-01, it would be used as the land component of an integrated air defense system.
