Thailand 'sick man of Asia'?

Thailand has no military power to do that.

Not only that, but they are suffering from compatibility and operational issues regarding the 2 Type 053 frigates they received from China. On an operational side, the Thai Navy lacks any submarine force or any viable ASW capability. The Vietnamese Navy could be capable of neutralizing them. In addition their only carrier, the HTMS Chakri Nareubet is under funded and lacks any solid air support. It would be a sitting duck for the Vietnamese Navy.

Plus the Thai have enough domestic problems, from social unrests to ethnic separatists.
I wonder why they don´t have money to operate the sole carrier they bought some years ago.

the Siamese are richer than Vietnam, on paper.

@Viet ,

I can understand the historical antecedents that may have played / shaped some hostility between Thais and Vietnamese. However, in this time, Vietnam and Thailand need to really cooperate with each other as ASEAN member states. The safety and security of South East Asia is dependent on the economic, military and political cooperation between the member states. Tho it is not SEATO, in spirit, there is semblance to SEATO and ASEAN.

One thing you have learned and are currently resisting is the threat of Chinese encroachment. Cooperation between Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines is really important. As these member-states are the countries with strong / growing economies , political clout. Individually, they can be no match for a certain large continental power in Asia, however, when cooperating-- is a potent force to be reckoned with.

Sure, Vietnam doesn't have any issues with Thailand. We even hope they become stable soon to help build a solid ASEAN community together.

Since when "sick man of Asia" is attached to Thailand? I remember this term was exclusively used for the Chinese during some time in history.

You are right. The "sick man of Asia" have been the title given to China from popular media/political societies from the west. However, through hard works and perseverance of the Chinese people and their government they have rebuild their country and soon will be able to get rid of that title. Though China is richer but a lot of its people still poor. So, give it another decade or so, China will not be the "sick man of Asia" anymore.

China stopped being the sick man of Asia at the conclusion of WWII. That epithet has passed on to the Philippines, for falling from Asia's second-richest nation in the immediate aftermath of WWII to one of the poorest and most corrupt:

In modern times, Philippines has been labelled as the new "sick man of Asia" for its economic instability and massive poverty

From wiki link above, I understand why they called Thailand like that.

In modern times, Philippines has been labelled as the new "sick man of Asia" for its economic instability and massive poverty despite increase in nominal GDP growth rate in the past 3 years (since 2010). But years after the Philippines was able to stand strong as the new administration struggle to fight corruption. The once so-called sick man of Asia is now one of the new Tiger Hob of Asia. The title sick man of Asia is later given to Thailand as its economy is getting slower.

Then we also have "sick man of Europe" title, passing from UK, Germany, Italy, to Russia, Portugal, France, Greece... from time to time, even to EU as the latest holder.

Vietnam-Thailand relation are very friendly today. Thailand is one of top traveling addresses of the Vietnamese.
Both countries are members of ASEAN, the two have established strategic partnerships.

Yes, mostly except those minority Chinese Thai who always advocate anti-Vietnam policies in favour of their mother country China.

You have a good memory for what your fomer colonial master saying, it looks like colonization really works.
Do you still remember agent orange are exclusively used for activities in Vietnam some time in history?

I like your comment and agree with it. However, i disagree with the point that Japan was somehow forced to modernize in other to avoid european colonization, if so why did it invade all asia and even China(though not all China since it mainly controled the southern partsas there was still heavy fighting going on), and what explains the barbarity Japan inclicted on its 'Asian brothers'?

so i dont agree that Japan just opened up and invaded/massacred it neighbours just because it feared the evil west colonizing it.:disagree:

I think you are confusing two very different eras. The end of the Shogunate and the Japan expansionist time, at least 30-50 years already passed between that time. Different era, different leader, different aim, different method?

Using your reasoning can we say all British/England leader since inception guilty for Irish famine, the British Indian famine, the Iraq war, the raise of iron curtain, anything that US do, or ........ (put anything that involved England/British and their ex colonies from Tudor era to this day).
