Peace talks between India, Naga rebels set for Tuesday

NEW DELHI: The Indian government will hold talks with Nagaland separatists to strike a peace deal, a rebel Naga leader said on Sunday.

Leaders of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-IM), which is fighting for the expansion of the mountainous Nagaland state in India’s remote northeast into a “Greater Nagaland”, arrived in the Indian capital on Saturday from self-imposed exile in The Netherlands.

Guerrilla leaders Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah said they were invited by the Indian government to hold talks and were optimistic that several key demands would be accepted.

“It is a pretty long time that we have been talking to the government of India. In more than 10 years, they could not solve the problem so they are responsible for that,” said Thuingaleng Muivah.

The rebel group’s demand for a “Greater Nagaland” that would unite 1.2 million Nagas has been strongly opposed by the surrounding neighbouring states of Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. Muivah said the group would not withdraw the demand. “No, sovereignty cannot be withdrawn because sovereignty is with the people ... We have been told that the government of India has arranged some counter-proposals from their side. I don’t know how far that is practicable or acceptable to us,” he said.

Meanwhile, India’s Home Secretary G.K Pillai said on Saturday demands for sovereignty or integration of Naga rebel groups were not feasible.

New Delhi and the rebels entered into a ceasefire in August 1997, which was indefinitely extended in 2007 but the separatists have accused the Indian government of using the ceasefire as cover to tighten its grip and of jeopardising a peace process.

India and the rebels of Nagaland state, bordering China and Myanmar, have held at least 50 rounds of peace talks in over a decade to end one of South Asia’s longest-running insurgencies. The dispute has claimed around 25,000 lives since India’s independence from Britain in 1947. afp

These are the terrorists organization patronized by China for decades.

Government should change its wiered policy of permit.

Yes India need s permit to visit Nagaland and they can go in even numbers not odd.

For example Indians can go in batch of 2 not 3 Indians can go in batch of 100 not 101.

It is weird, these are the rules made at the time of Britishers so that they can cut off NE areas from India and convert them to the Christianity.

Also, no Indian is allowed to settle or buy property there, it should be scrapped.

Nopes, these rules are to protect the North-east's ecology and natural resources, you don't want hordes of tourists visiting places like Sikkim and spoiling it, the same applies to Andaman & Nicobar Islands, dynamics are different here

calling it a separatist movement will not be correct as article says they want areas of adjoing states and make greater nagaland under Indian fedral structure

I'm not saying nagas are unfriendly they are as Indian as anybody else.

I'm referring to Nagaland's Chief Minister's interview published a month back in Times of India about the British time rules etc. and are not discontinued by GoI, till date.

These are the words of Naga CM about strange rules of even and odd.

The Nagaland's CM was for promoting tourism and investment in his state.

Nagas, khalistan, bodos, telugana maoists.....India is full of problems 1000nds of insurgent groups we r horrified to get out of the house.... r u guys happy...i feel jealous of Pakistan where the peace is flourishing

These types of rules are giving play ground to the Foreign countries.

Look at Kashmir where is the same rule applies. No Indian can merry, purchase property or settle there. Same is with North East, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar etc.

The after the death of former Lok Sabha speaker PM Saeed his son "Mohd Hamdullah Saeed" was born in Bombay (currently Mumbai)

But according to rules only a person born in Lakshdeep with both of his parents born in Lakshdeep is eligible for contesting parliamentary elections.

Then the rules are changed for him and he the "Mohd Hamdullah Saeed" is now a Congress MP from Lakshadweep. When Italy born Sonia Gandhi can become PM of India and Indian born outside Lakshadweep can't become even a MP is strange.

Cool down for a big country like India these are nothing.

Also, it is because of enemy countries and the ethinic Nagas, Sikhs, Bodos, telagu are not supporting it. Only few Foreign funded puppets.

The solutions is strong will and measures by GoI they talk about reforms in economy and always back tracks from reforms in rotten policies.

Yes, there is no movement like in Punjab every Sikh is happy and proud Indian.

Only few foreign supported and funded puppets creates song and dance drama. As they are staging in Kashmir.

my government should provide some real assistance to these freedom fighters.

they do not agree the regime in new dehli, they fight for their own better lives, they deserve the support from us.

the message is clear to india: stop supporting terrorists like Dalai Lama, or we can also fund those freedom fighter in your backyard.
