The Indian National Football Team achieved its best-ever FIFA Ranking since February 1996 as they were ranked 96 in the July FIFA Rankings released on Thursday.

In the process, India are currently placed 12th in AFC.

India’s best-ever FIFA Ranking till date stays 94 which was attained in February 1996.

Indian Football and the National Team have been on an upsurge with a string of good results leading to a climb of 77 places in FIFA Rankings over the last two years.

The Team has now won 13 of their last 15 matches and are unbeaten in the last 8 matches (including the unofficial match against Bhutan).

India were ranked 171 when Constantine took over as National Coach for the second time in February 2015 and slipped further to 173 in March 2015 in the FIFA ladder even before Constantine could have his first game in charge against Nepal, which India eventually won 2-0 on aggregate.

AIFF president Praful Patel said, “It’s a giant leap of faith for Indian Football. Two years back, we were 173 and now we have reached our second best FIFA Ranking ever. The leap signifies the potential of Indian Football. Congratulations to the National Team boys, the Coach, the staff and all in AIFF.”

National Coach Stephen Constantine stated: “When I took over, I had mentioned that my target was to bring India below 100. I am happy to have played a small part in this process. Kudos to the boys, the staff and a big thank you to my colleagues in AIFF for supporting us all throughout. I also need to thank Mr. Patel and Mr. Das for their trust in allowing me to do things in the manner I wanted.”

“But the present FIFA spot doesn’t mean that we have achieved much. We need to stay focused on the upcoming challenges.”

A qualification spot in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 is what the AIFF aims at this moment. That would be India’s second AFC Asian Cup stint in 8 years, the last being in Doha in 2011.

Indian sports on a roll.
With kadambi beating Olympic champion in badminton , to hockey team at no 6 and looking good ,to our reaching the cricket finals and our women cricketers also winning all matches till now. Also both men and women chess teams placed 4th in the world team chess .
Our tennis guy beating world no 8 .
Now football also improving , something not expected at all.
Very few states like Bengal,Goa ,7 sisters and Kerala actually playing football this improvement in ranking is really good.

77 places up last 2 years..Hell yea
Though I detest Brits like anything , this guy Constantine deserves the dronacharya coach award.
Though frankly I have no idea whether our team has really improved as the stats show or its a flash in the pan.

We will be in the top 20 if we regularly have matches with Pakistan, India should improve Pakistan in other sports as well, so that we can have matches with them and improve our sports viewership as well.

FIFA ranking is just floating. I want to see if India qualifies for the next Asia cup. And see how we fare up against regional heavyweights like Iran, Korea, Saudi, Iraq, Japan. Man we were runners up in Asia Cup football before.

We need to be a constant in top 70...

Good achievement but not enough :undecided:. It will take generations for us to be good at this sport.

yup, sadly still not good enough for those heavy weights. They are just too good for us yet.Maybe in ext ten years we might give them some fight if we continue to focus on developing football at primary and secondary levels.

Indian Football needs a 83 moment. Simple as that. India was a weak team in 83, underdogs, and yet we won against all odds. India cant win WC, but can try Asia Cup. We need to become a regular in Asia cup first.

Indian plan play nepal 100 times and gain 5 points and it over and over again never seen them in against any Top Asian team like Iran or GCC countries or Australia

Can check other years too.

For 2017 results:

IND 3 - 2 Cambodia
IND 1 - 0 Myanmar
IND 2 - 0 Nepal
IND 1 - 0 Kyrgyzstan

No one is saying India is a top Asian team, but we are making progress. No one even interested in playing Pakistan since 2015, why is that?
