It is a technology demonstrator. That is not a prototpye F3. Just like the BAE EAP was not a Eurofighter EFA-2000 Typhoon prototype. (The sole EAP aircraft first flew on 8 August 1986. The EAP aircraft was retired from service on 1 May 1991. The first prototype of the finalised Eurofighter made its first flight on 27 March 1994.)

Yes i do agree some members here are just rediculing Japans effort for some reason i dont know. Making a 5th stealth generation fighter jet is not a childs play. Of course it has to start from soemwhere, which is usually a tech demostrator first and foremost before proceeding to a prototype etc and moving to the real thing which will still require years or even decade of tests before it gets into production and even more time before they become operational. For now the only currently combat-ready fifth-generation fighter is the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor,. And only the U.S , China and Russia have a prototype 5th generation fighter jet which has been carrying flight tests and will probably enter service in a few years from now. Only these nations have the capabilities to produced such an advanced fighter jet independently. we in the E.U also have these capabilities, but due to budget constraints/policies etc our is still in a WIP(work in projects/still in talk stage). Moreover we have access/participate in the F-35 production, and have stake in thsi as well. So we will be receiving them as soon as they get operational. So this makes it even more unlikely for us to develop one of our own. Japan also certainly has the capabilities to build one , which it is now doing. Im sure in a few years from now, we will see a Japanese stealth fighter prototype and hopefully they will also get into operation after these(though much later than those from the U.S, China, and Russia), but still the most important thing is that Japan at least has started, and from here it will only progress unil it has an operational 5th generation stealth fighter jet. So nobody should belittle Japans effort for very few country can take on the challenge of developing a stealth fighter jet independently. Only few countries i mentioned are capable of doing this alone. SO kudos to Japan for getting into this club.

lool dont laugh at Iran like that bro. At least they are trying(giving they are isolated/under severe sanctions for years now) compared to other middle eastern countries like Saudi Arabia who have much more money/cash and tech transfer available from us in the west/U.S but still they cant even produce a car themselves talk less of producing sophisticated military equipments like fighter jets, missiles, UAVs etc. The only middle eastern countries i respect for their efforts to be independent/self sufficient is Iran and Turkey, the rest are jokes to be honest.

If RC planes count as "trying", a lot of children in the first world are developing jets. You can buy one in the store if you have 100-200 bucks.

ON a serious note, i am not following the Japanese 5th generation fighter development very closed but i am sure of one thing, when they get that thing ready, it will be one hell of a plane, competing at the very top level. China Russia may not be able to meet that in technology, only US may have something to say and that because of there many years of experience with this technology

Dude, F-3 is tiny Tejas sized plane, with two puny 11,000 lb engines. J-20 is 2 classes sizes above, F-22 sized, with two 35,000 lb engines. They aren't even the same size class. Plus, J-20 flew in January 2011. F-3 won't fly till after 2018, if ever.

Thank for sharing this, as i mentioned, i am not following the Japanese 5th generation program so don't have much details but still, there are a few things i do know.

The F-3 is meant to be a TECHNOLOGY DEMONSTRATOR aircraft that is reportedly to be 1/3 of the size of possible bulk production aircraft so this settles the size issue. Once operation, the Japanese stealth place (they are working on 6th generation specs) may well be in same size/weight category as F-22 or J-20. Even if it is not, this is not what i was referring to. Given Japanese rich history in high end stuff and technology, it is safe to predict that they can come up with a great avionics pack and WE suite that will be on par with the best in the world.

Don't know the project time line but if 2018 is correct that is not too late either considering they are trying to incorporate some 6th generation specs already.
