Twenty-nine Taliban militants have been killed and 15 others wounded in one day operations across Afghanistan, said the country's Interior Ministry on Monday morning.
"Afghan National Police (ANP) in coordination with the Afghan army, intelligence agency and the NATO-led coalition forces conducted several cleanup operations in Nangarhar, Baghlan, Kunduz, Faryab, Uruzgan, Logar, Ghazni, Farah and Helmand provinces over the last 24 hours. As a result 29 armed Taliban were killed, 15 wounded and seven other armed Taliban were arrested," the ministry said in a press statement.
The ANP also seized weapons and ammunition besides defusing several roadside bombs or Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), it noted.
In northern Baghlan province, 25 militants have been wounded and 11 other suspects detained during an ongoing joint army and police operation in Baghlan-e-Markazi district, the provincial police chief Assadullah Shirzad told Xinhua earlier on Monday.
The Taliban, which has intensified attacks since they launched annual spring offensive in late April, has yet to make comments.
The Afghan security forces and the NATO-led coalition troops continue to press Taliban and other militant groups recently. But the insurgent groups responded by bombings.
On Sunday evening, the provincial chief of the High Peace Council and administrative chief of Dih Yak district of eastern Ghazni province was injured along with three others when an IED hit his vehicle there.
Hajji Fazil Ahmad Tolwak and other injured were receiving treatment in a hospital in province capital Ghazni city where health official said the injured were in critical condition. Two policemen with the convoy were also killed in the attack.
