Dhaka, Jul 18 (bdnews24.com) – This year 78.67 percent has passed the Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations and 61,162 got GPA-5.

The Education Minister Nurul Islam has submitted a copy of the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban Wednesday morning. Chairmen of different education boards were present there.

Last year, 75.08 percent passed the HSC and equivalent examinations and 39,759 got GPA-5.

This year Sylhet board has the highest passing rate of 85.37 percent.

Dhaka board follows with 81.89 percent, Comilla with 74.56, Rajshahi 78.44 percent, Dinajpur 75.41 percent, Chittagong 72.29 percent, Jessore 67.87 percent and Barisal with 66.98 percent.

The pass rate under the Madrasah board is 91.77 percent while the vocational board has 84.32 percent successful students.

A total of 926,814 students sat for the HSC and equivalent examinations that started on Apr 1 and ended on May 22. A total of 721, 979 of them passed.

The rate of passing amongst girls is 89.19 percent and 78.23 percent for boys.

A total of 1,036 institutions have seen all their students pass, while none passed from 24 institutions.

Education Minister will disclose the details of this year's results at a press conference at 1pm at the ministry. The examinees can check results directly on the website www.educationboardresults.gov.bd

The candidates can also get their result sending SMS to 16222. They need to type in the message option – HSC space [First 3 letters of the respective education board] space [Roll no] space 2012 and send to 16222.

For example: HSC dha 123456 2012 and send to 16222.

A total of 926,814 students sat for the HSC and equivalent examinations that started on Apr 1 and ended on May 22. Of them, 496,395 are male and 430,419 female.

Education main tool for building a poverty- free Bangladesh: PM

DHAKA, July 18 (BSS) - Describing education as the main tool for building a poverty- free Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said her government is firmly committed to achieving the goal.

"It is not possible to eliminate poverty without development of education," she said while receiving the results of this year's HSC and equivalent examinations at her official Ganobhaban residence here this morning.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid formally handed over the result sheets of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations-2012 to Sheikh Hasina.

The Prime Minister congratulated the students who came out successful in this year's HSC exams.

She also thanked the teachers for their endeavors to help the students pass the exams. She said her government has been working relentlessly to improve the quality of education side by side with increasing literacy rate to build an illiteracy-free Bangladesh by 2014.

Expressing satisfaction over results of this year's HSC exams, the Prime Minister said, "Our students are meritorious and they can do well, given the minimum opportunities."

Sheikh Hasina said the results are very satisfactory and urged the students to pay more attention to their studies for better results to establish Bangladesh as an enlightened and dignified nation on the world stage.

She said the government is working to build a hunger and poverty-free 'Sonar Bangla' being imbued with the spirit of the Liberation War as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman through making Bangladesh a technologically-advanced country with modern education.

Referring to publishing of this year's HSC results within only 55 days, the Prime Minister said it is a big achievement for the education sector. "Positive results have been yielded following the change of education system," she said.

Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad and senior officials were present on the occasion.

Later, the Prime Minister published the results of the HSC examinations online by pressing a computer button.

After publishing the HSC results online, the Prime Minister talked to the students and teachers of the Rajshahi Government College and Rajshahi Government Women College and guardians of the students through videoconferencing.

Mayor of Rajshahi AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, divisional commissioner and deputy commissioner of Rajshahi, principals and two students of the two colleges also spoke on the occasion.

Referring to the announcement of the results online and talking with people of Rajshahi through videoconferencing, Sheikh Hasina said it is the achievement of building "Digital Bangladesh" as pledged by the present government.

"Now the students of even rural areas do not need to go to the upazila and district headquarters for their results as it could be known through a simple SMS from mobile phone," she said.

Responding to a demand of a student of Rajshahi Government Women College during the videoconferencing, the Prime Minister instantly announced that a hostel for the students of the college would be built.
