BANGALORE: There was a
surprise in store for the aam
janata on Thursday - though the
air show opens to the public only in the afternoon, they were allowed in right from
the morning. Some, though, had to cough up as
much as Rs 2,000 for better access to the
exhibition area. Most of the mean machines that flew on the first
day were seen in action on the second day too --
Rafale fighter jets, Tejas, Sarang helicopter team
and others had audiences on the edge of their
seats. The Tejas was a huge hit on both days. "It looks
and sounds better than most of the old MiGs and
Sukhois. The plane is sleek and moves swiftly,"
said Arjun Das, a lawyer who visited Aero India
2013 for the first time on Thursday. "This aircraft
should definitely be integrated into the Indian Air Force." Many youngsters thronged various stalls at the
event for valuable insights into the functioning of
an aircraft. "I always wanted to be a pilot. But I
never got an opportunity to be one," said Gunjan
Kumar, 22, a final-year BA student. "This is the
closest I've come to real aircraft, fighter planes and aeroplane engines. I also got a glimpse of the
Air Chief of Staff," said the youngster. Though the show may be an attractive event for
western suppliers eyeing lucrative deals, many
foreign delegates and those from the armed
forces were seen enjoying the nonbusiness
aspects too. "I love the weather, it's bright and
warm and the shows are amazing ," said a member of the US Air Force. "I miss the Surya Kirans. I've been coming for
every aero show because both of us are very
interested in fighter planes," said Haritha Shankar,
a homemaker from Old Airport Road who came
with her husband. If those on the campus got up, close and personal
with the craft, those outside didn't miss much
too. Villagers and others thronged Bellary Road
and took up vantage points to see the action in
the sky. And fruit vendors and chaatwallahs did
brisk business, even as they took in the aerobatics. KNIGHTS MAY ARRIVE TODAY The much-awaited Russian Knights aerobatic
team did not turn up on Thursday too. The team,
which has been held up at the Hindon Air Force
Station in New Delhi, is expected to arrive on
Friday. However, officials in Bangalore are unsure if the
team would be putting up any displays during
the remaining three days of the air show and
may restrict themselves to only static display. On Thursday, there were reports that the team
was awaiting clearance from the ministry of
home affairs to proceed to Bangalore. The
Russian team was, in fact, slated to take part in
the inaugural of the five-day event but was
delayed in Moscow due to bad weather.
