PESHAWAR: The apparent use of a woman for carrying out suicide blast in Bajaur Agency on Saturday is a change of tactics and would turn into a dangerous trend if the militant outfits have more female would-be bombers, security analysts fear.

Militant outfits in Bajaur and banned Tehrik Taliban Pakistan sometimes back have warned through FM radio and in conversations with journalists that they had trained squads of female bombers that could be sent on mission any time.

Over 250 suicide attacks have so far been carried out in Pakistan since 2006, but for the first time woman bomber was used in Bajaur. The first suicide attack occurred at Ashura procession in Hangu in 2006, killing 22 people.

In December 2007, although a woman, believed to be a bomber, was killed in an explosion near a security barrier in Peshawar, yet intelligence reports confirmed that the said woman was only carrying explosives and the device was triggered by someone else.

Defence analyst and former secretary security Fata Brig Mahmood Shah said that he was not sure that a woman bomber had carried out attack in Khar. It might be misperception of the eyewitnesses, who believed that they heard a woman’s cry, he said.

“If females are used in suicide attacks then it can be more dangerous,” he said. He added that militants had been using teenagers in suicide attacks and he did not believe that they would engage women also.

Some Militant groups in Middle East and Liberation of Tamil Tiger Elam (LTTE), a separatist organisation in Sri Lanka, had used females in suicide missions. But such trend was not seen in Pakistan so far.

Sources said that Taliban leaders Maulana Faqir Mohammad and Maulvi Mohammad Omar had warned time and again that they had women, who were willing to blow themselves up.

“Maulana Faqir was making announcements on FM radio warning of involving female in suicide missions,” said a resident of Bajaur. He said that local authorities had received intelligence reports that militants might carry out attack in the area.

Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq, who claimed responsibility for the attack in Bajaur, though did not verify involvement of female suicide bomber, yet he claimed that they had dozens of trained women, who were ready to lay down their lives.

Injured persons brought to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar mostly believed that they had heard screaming of a female following which the blast occurred. They added that they were sure that the attacker was a female clad in the traditional shuttlecock burqa.

An inhabitant of Bajaur told Dawn that any use of female for conducting such blasts in future would complicate the situation for the security agencies as the traditional burqa was all enveloping and in that costume it would be difficult to differentiate between a bomber and ordinary woman.

i really wonder how could those people be so brainwashed that they kill themselves along with other even if that includes babies????? :frown:

tamil tiger had the bloods of more innocents on their hand whereas taleban mostly aims to target whom they perceive as foreign invaders --though they are guilty of some crimes against humanity as well

it's a beyond stupid comparison, considering Sri Lanka has never been invaded by foreign army(s).....the tamil tigers fought a civil war whereas taleban do not aim to fight on ethnic lines; they are religiously motivated. Some may argue that most taleban are Pakhtuns but in this context it is irrelevant.

Most of Sri Lanka even the civilians rallied against the indian backed ltte....and 25 years later they fell. Taleban are more popular in Afghanistan today than they were in early 2000s and it has become quite evident.

i finally found the word i was looking for in your post.

Before this thread becomes infested with Taliban sympathizers with their verbal diarrhea of how Taliban is morally superior in their acts and aims, compared to other terrorist groups, which has nothing to do with the topic in the first place.

The fact here is tactics and method, not who is the more evil/brutal group

LTTE invented the suicide belts also probably first in usage of women as well as children in suicide bombing.Assuming Dhanu was a girl child.

Change of methods mostly means they are getting desperate. So when they have videos of kids doing beheadings, when its their last stand, they"ll certainly use children/women as suicide bombers.

Looks like victory is near for Pakistani forces.

UIF were not foriegn invaders in Afghanistan.. Ahmad Shah Massoud.. Abdul Qadir.. Bismillah Khan.. Sher Alam.. numerous other Islamic brother Hazaras, Tajiks, Uzbeks and even other Pasthuns were not foreign invaders... Taliban are an ethnic group who aim to try to rule all afghanistan through power of the gun.. they are by no means a "religious" movement... heck.. they are not even direct succesors of afghan mujahideen... they are splinter group trying to rally 40% of Afghan Pashtuns and take over all country by force.. they just forget the other 60% of ethnic groups of afghanistan join hands to try to counter them.. it is by no means a religious struggle.. it is pure and simple centuries old ethnic tribal rivalry..

Actually its relevant in a way. The LTTE were ethinc Tamils and Hindus while the army was ethnic Sinhalese and Buddhists. The LTTE was an extreme reaction was because of supressing Tamil culture and religion among other things. The Sri Lankan army was perceived as an occupying force.

Suicide bombers usually are found in places were they percieved themselves as being occupied and that this is the only way to get rid of the occupation. So Tamils percieved that Sri Lankan army was an occupying force on their land while the TTP "percieves" that the Pakistani security forces are occupiers of their land.

Check out the study by Robert Pape on suicide bombing. Its quite interesting.
Here is one of his articles

I guess foreign invaders were receiving food at a UN station...

The taleban as god thinking has so much support among Pakistanis i doubt it'll be gone anytime soon.
BTW isn't this bajaur which PA had declared clear of Taleban?

I disagree with Abu Zolfiqar's comments, terror is terror. They kill civilians, innocents. There is no differentiation at all, who ever it is..

They used a women back in 2007 as well, at a bombing in peshawar's cantt area.. at the street where i used to live..
However.. the only way to acertain it was actually a women is to find the famous "head" of the bomber..
After all.. "Burkay ke peechay kya hai??".. is usually unknown..

p.s

The Taliban are using something much more broader for their cause..
And the unfortunate issue here is that unlike an ethnic cause..where people could still take a side.. the understanding and interpretation of Islam is so varied across the nation that even those that oppose them on principle fear to do so considering that somehow they may be violating an Islamic tenet in the process.
And it will remain so even if and after the Taliban are defeated, the disowning of the Study of Quran and Islamic values by most educated Pakistani's and the virtual monopoly of a generally ignorant clergy on all things related to Islam will ensure that any self-proclaimed right hand man of the "Mahdi" will be able to rise up and entice people into a false ideology of "pan-islamism"..or even ethnically motivated movement by the support of such "Ulema's"..

On a military level..
The LTTE were eventually faced with death or the sea..
The Taliban have a fallback territory in the badlands of the Durand line, where political disputes will hinder any pursue from our side..and any response from the ISAF.

Exactly, we are fighting a never ending battle because ending it would mean wiping out half of our tribal area population plus half of the Afghan population otherwise they'll just keep on brainwashing and recruiting new people to replace the ones that are sent hell bound by PA. The other possibility is to cutoff their arms supply line which is also impossible due to obvious reasons whose detail i don't want to go into so as not to derail the thread.
As long as these TT's (P or A) have a place to run and hide they will never be wiped out. So what can we do about it?

The solution to the mess... Initiate dialogue and discussions... Strongly prohibit and enforce a no drone within Pakistani territory policy... Make the Americans leave Jacobabad etc and if the CIA attempts to bring in a drone from Afghanistan, scramble jets and shoot it down even if it turns back into Afghanistan...

We miss a key point in the whole affair which is that whatever support the Taliban muster it is basically because of two things...

1. Pakistan is a 'stupid' partner in the highly unpopular WOT. The majority of people do not want this and perceive this as a blatant proof of the 'kufr' of the Pakistani establishment including Pakistan's Army. (thank you very much Musharaf)

2. The majority of casualties due to these drone strikes have been that of civilians... Once you kill a woman's family for no other reason that they were living in Bajuar, you can expect that woman to get even in some sort of a desperate manner like attacking those who are taking 'government' aid...

....

These are the seeds that our enemies including the traitors within our ranks have sowed for an ugly fruit and future of Pakistan...

Any ideas on how we stop and reverse it should be the prime discussion of the day...
