Prime Minister Shekh Hasina Tuesday urged the Navy to ensure security of the country's vast maritime area enriched with precious mineral and fish resources, reports UNB.
Speaking at the Graduation Parade of Midshipman-2010 Alpha Batch at Bangladesh Naval Academy, she said the government is actively considering purchase of two submarines to give tri-dimensional shape to the naval force.
The Prime Minister said that her previous government (1996-2001) took massive programme to upgrade the navy to tri-dimensional modern force.
As part of the programme, she said, sophisticated naval frigate BNS "Bangabandhu'' was procured from Korea and added to the Navy in 2001. "But, the previous government had decommissioned BNS Bangabandhu.''
Hasina said that currently, naval aviation and two newly purchased marine helicopters were added to BNS ''Bangabandhu'' as part of the plan to make it full combatant.
After forming the government this time, she said a modern hydrographic survey ship ''Anusandhan'' and two castle ships BNS Bijoy and BNS Dhaleswari were incorporated in the Navy.
Furthermore, she said five patrol crafts and one oil tanker are under construction at Ananda Shipyard. With this, the opportunity of building warships in Bangladesh has been opened up.The Prime Minister said the Naval Aviation established by her government is going to be commissioned today. Already two helicopters have joined the Naval Aviation and one marine patrol aircraft from Germany will soon join it.
Besides, she said purchase of two frigates and two corvettes is under process to reinstall old frigates. She said 'Special Warfare Diving and Salvage (SWADS)' formally began its operation from Tuesday to make the naval commando unit more skilled and organized.
Hasina said foundation of the Bangabandhu Complex will soon start its function to modernise the Bangladesh Naval Academy.
She advised the junior officers to keep the national interest above petty personal interest and to refrain from any acts that might harm the image and tradition of the Bangladesh Navy.
The Prime Minister also urged them to ensure the country's geographical security working shoulder to shoulder with the army and the air force and also stand beside the distressed people at the time of any disaster.
The President's Parade was held today (Tuesday) for Midshipman 2010-A Batch. This batch started training in January 2010 as officer cadets in the Bangladesh Naval Academy Through the President's Parade, 32 midshipmen including 24 cadets of Bangladesh Navy with two females, seven of Palestine and one of Maldivian Navy were commissioned. The Prime Minister inspected the parade and took salute. She also distributed awards among the cadets for their outstanding performances.

Congratulations BD

Excellent news...! According to be, Hasina might probably go for Chinese Song Class and from her tone, it looks like she will get them before the end of her tenure...and i hope it is true.

The frigates might be Jiangwei and for corvettes the Pohang class...the latter was mentioned in a Janes article. Not sure though.

Cheers!!!

According to your article Zabaniya, this is also mentioned :-

According to informal reports, the delivery contract with China on two Jiangwei-II class frigates (project 053H3) and three helicopters Z-9 is underway.

So is Z-9 induction still under process? I never heard of any update after the news was first released.

Cheers!!!

Yup, those helicopters are included in the procurement deal of the frigates

The Harbin Z-9 (NATO reporting name "Haitun") is a Chinese military utility helicopter. It is a license-built version of the French Eurocopter Dauphin, and is manufactured by Harbin Aircraft Manufacturing Corporation.

LOL...why does NATO have a code-name for it even though it's French design origin?

A foreign Defence Journal wrote a few weeks ago that BN will purchase D-E type of Submarines. The Journal was telling of one unit. Now, the PM is talking about two units. Diesel-electric submarine needs an explanation. People know diesel engines are very noisy, and it is evident that a diesel engine powered BN submarine will be detected by the enemy navy by this sound.

However, a D-E is different. When on a normal mission, a diesel engine powers the submarine. But, during wartime, when the submarine is near the enemy ships, it is switched to electrically operated motor. Electric motor makes less sound than even a big fish. So, it will remain underwater without being traced by the enemy ships. D-E submarines are very dangerous, therefore.

I have also read that BN will purchase these from Germany. But, I do not know if these will be old or new. However, I would prefer the 1st one to be an old submarine, which the sailors will use for their job training. I think, the Russian article is rather old to say that the Submarines will be all old and will come from China.

In my opinion we should go for new subs instead of old ones.

*New subs will be able to serve us for a longer time, especially since bd economy is small
*Older subs may require more maintenence than newer ones
*Newer subs will have a greater deterance factor than older ones

I get the fact that we dont have much submarine training in our navy. So we should start training with the chinese or other friendly countries on how to operate a submarine. Since we are getting our subs(stated by sources) around 2020, we have plenty of time to learn how they operate

It would be so nice if BN buys two brand new submarines. But, submarines are quite expensive. Considering the track record of BN, it be purchasing old subs, however, no one really knows about it except the top BN officers.

BN has already selected Magnama as the new naval base. I suspect it will also become the submarine base. Magnama seems to be well secured. There is a sea channel in between the proposed deep sea port in Kutubdia and Magnama. It means an enemy ship cannot directly see the base from sea and bomb it.
