China again warns foreign oil firms on South China Sea exploration.
BEIJING | Mon Oct 31, 2011 3:48pm IST

(Reuters) - China on Monday warned foreign energy companies against exploration in the disputed South China Sea after U.S. oil giant Exxon Mobil Corp said it had discovered hydrocarbons in August off central Vietnam, in an area also claimed by China.

The potentially significant gas discovery was made off the coast of Danang city, bringing a territorial row over the resource-rich South China Sea back into focus.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei reiterated at a regular briefing that "China has indisputable sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and adjacent waters," referring to the South China Sea.

"We hope foreign companies do not get involved in disputed waters for oil and gas exploration and development. This position has been consistent," Hong said, when asked whether China plans to ask Exxon Mobil to withdraw from its oil and gas deal with Vietnam.

He did not elaborate, nor single out Exxon Mobil by name.

Exxon Mobil has a licence from the Vietnamese government to explore blocks 117, 118 and 119 off the Danang coast, falling within what Vietnam claims is its 200-mile exclusive economic zone under international maritime law, the Financial Times reported last week.

But the blocks also fall within China's vast claim to almost the entire South China Sea, also claimed in part by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Taiwan.

The sea and areas such as the Spratly Islands and other atolls are believed to have rich deposits of oil and gas and is also a rich fishing ground.

One of China's most popular newspapers, the Global Times, cautioned last week that nations involved in territorial disputes in the waters should "mentally prepare for the sounds of cannons" if they remain at loggerheads with Beijing.

Vietnam calls on youth to contribute to Truong Sa

The Vietnam People’s Navy is cooperating with the Central Youth Union to organize a “youth journey for our motherland’s seas and islands” from May 6 to May 17.

Tuoi Tre had an interview with Senior Lieutenant Colonel Do Minh Tuan, head of youth department and deputy head of the journey about youth and their contribution towards cementing Vietnam’s sovereignty over islands and seas.

Islands and seas of Vietnam are spread along the country so if we utilize their strengths, the economy could hugely benefit. We have many projects to develop seas and islands but with the state’s limited sources, developing them meets many obstacles.

TT: If each young citizen donates a rock or a handful of soil to Truong Sa (Spratly) islands, people living there and army officers stationed there could have a better life?

The Party and State pay attention to islets and islands small and large including those of Truong Sa. Some large islands like Son Ca are heavily influenced by big tides which could sweep over landmarks that assert Vietnam sovereignty.

Meanwhile, we have some islands that are still submerged under sea level but which some foreign countries claim to own and where some foreign countries always want to plant flags.

TT: Have the navy had specific programs?

The Vietnam People’s Navy has not officially carried out the program but I have suggested the Vietnam Youth Federation about this. Each pebble, each soil will contribute to protecting the sovereignty over islands.

It will also raise awareness of the Vietnamese people regarding Vietnam’s sovereignty over islands and seas.

We will gladly transport those donations to islands that need them.

Out of 30 islands and islets of Truong Sa district, a third needs further construction.

We want all people, especially students and youth to contribute rocks and soil. We could gather them together and move them to Truong Sa.

The value of one kilogram of cement, a rock on the mainland may not amount to much but they will be significant on Truong Sa islands, bearing testimony to people’s attachment to them.

The truth is there are many people wanting to contribute to Truong Sa but don’t know how.

Keep warning, and we will keep moving forward :partay:

China should learn the proverb...finders keepers, losers weepers. More countries should join Vietnam in the oil explorations, it benefits everyone, let China yell, weep, cry all it wants, no one is listening.
