Beijing: China on Thursday said it will build more aircraft carriers apart from the 'Liaoning' to boost its defence and military capabilities.

"There will surely be more addition to Chinese military's first aircraft carrier Liaoning, launched last year," said China's Defence Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun.

China will comprehensively consider the development of aircraft carriers in accordance with the needs of national defence and military building, he added.

Currently, China operates one aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which is based on an unfinished Russian-made carrier. It was delivered to the Chinese Navy on September 25 last year. The carrier's original design allows it to carry about 30 fixed-wing aircraft.

China has also developed carrier-borne aircraft called J-15, which will be the main strike aircraft for its carrier fleet. The Liaoning has conducted successful take-off and landing tests of its carrier-borne J-15 fighters.

Technically, rather than building it, China bought an existing (near finished) hull and fitted it out. As for the J-15, more credit is due: while an unfinished Su-33 prototype, the T-10K-3, was acquired from Ukraine sometime in 2001 and studied extensively, development on the J-15 began immediately afterward. While the J-15 appears to be structurally based on the Su-33, the indigenous fighter features Chinese technologies as well as avionics from the J-11B program

the liaoning is of course the ex-varyag which is an empty former soviet hull that the chinese rebuilt into a working carrier. the next carrier is suppose to be based off of liaoning but larger and i assume better optimized use of space/island size. and while the t-10k-3 was acquired, the studies were obviously for its structural bits(ie:landing gear and folding wings), the decades old avionics are clearly worthless to the chinese. none the less this is china's very first carrier and carrier jet. for the first step this is actually pretty good, giving the chinese hand-on experience immediately on a large carrier(among the largest outside of the USN) and now the next step is exciting, the next carrier as i have said is probably liaoning based, but what about the 3rd? will it be nuclear power? will it be catobar? itll certainly be bigger than liaoning thats for sure.

Technically speaking, a television is made by fitting something of arguablelly important nature into an empty plastic hull.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Liaoning will only ever be used as a training platform, and not for actual military operations, correct? This would make more sense if China's future carriers are going to be based off the Liaoning.

it will be used. IT will be training also, but it will also be used for combat. IS there a reason why it won't? It is fully armed and staffed, with more than enough funding. It may not be as good as future carriers but it is the world's biggest after American carriers.

@Speeder2

hater's going to hate, or just not informed. When the carrier was brought back, not only was it empty, ti was dirty with rats and everything. The staff had to clean it before even able to go inside to take a look.

Chinese Commander in Chief of the PLAN is in the states visiting with the first carrier captain and first J-15 landing pilot.

In the interview, which is part "english" says China has disclosed the details of it's carrier program and the South China sea situation, as well as why there is an increase presence by China in the area.

The US counterparts has agreed on the necessity of China's plans and actions.

Part of what's being discussed is that the carrier is being used for research and has 36 fighters. It's goal is to have an understanding of the carrier and carrier operations. This will determine how China will move forward with its carrier program.

So, China building more carriers is a given, but the time is not now. It will need to be when all the planning has been completed.
