China keen to sign MoU with BD for road, rly links via Myanmar

China is keen to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangladesh to establish direct road and railway links between the two countries via Myanmar to boost economic activities, reports agencies.

"China will provide support to Bangladesh to increase the tri-nation road connectivity involving Myanmar," said the visiting Governor of Yunnan Province of China Qin Guangrong when he paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.

They discussed wide range of bilateral issues including expansion of trade and business and enhancing cooperation in agriculture sector, said Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad after the meeting.

Mentioning the business prospect between the two countries, the Prime Minister said her government has decided in principle to set up a Consular Office at Kunmin in China in a bid to boost bilateral trade and business in the region.

She welcomed the Chinese leader to her office and said Bangladesh wants to enhance regional cooperation through connectivity for the mutual benefit of the people of this vast region.

In this context, Hasina sought Chinese cooperation in establishing direct highway and railway links with China via Myanmar as well as in construction of hydroelectricity plant and exploration of gas and oil in Bangladesh.

She mentioned that Bangladesh continues to uphold the "One China policy and recognises Taiwan and Tibet as integral parts of China."

The Prime Minister also sought further cooperation in the field of agriculture, education, civil aviation, tourism, power and energy between Bangladesh and China as well as Yunnan province.

The Governor arrived here on a two-day official visit at the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's invitation extended during her visit to Kunming, capital of Yunnan, in March this year.

About the much-talked about tri-nation 111 Kms-long high way connecting Bangladesh-Myanmar-China, Qin said the Chinese government will extend all necessary cooperation to establish the highway.

In reply, the Prime Minister said the proposed highway connecting Chittagong-Myanmar-Kunming would play a vital role in increasing bilateral trade and commerce.

"Bangladesh looks forward to establishing direct road and rail links with China via Myanmar," Hasina said.

Hasina thanked the Chinese authorities for existing air link between the two countries via Kunming that made Kunming-Dhaka trip easier and comfortable.

The Prime Minister reiterated Bangladesh's One China Policy saying that Bangladesh believes in friendly relations with all her neighbouring countries as its foreign policy is 'Friendship to All, Malice to None.'

In reply, the Governor thanked the Prime Minister and the people of this country for showing great hospitality to him and his delegation members since they arrived here.

Qin said the Prime Minister's visit to China last March has strengthened bilateral relation between Dhaka and Beijing to a great extent.

He observed that after the Prime Minister's visit to Kunming, trade and commerce between Bangladesh and the province has increased significantly. Now various quality Bangladeshi goods are available in the markets of Kunming, he said.

Communication Minister Syed Abul Hossain, Principal Secretary to PM MA Karim, PM's Office Secretary Mollah Waheeduzzaman and Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Zhang Xianyi were present.

Hasina will be visiting Myanmar later this year. She probably will sign some deal then. They suppose to form some 3 nation committee.
Good sign that China took the whole project really seriously.

China is keen but where is Awami regime action?
Across political spectrum there is unity to build road and rail link with China. China openly said they are ready to sign agreement and cooperate and perhaps finance the project. Since March, Hasina regime just spoken about interest and wishes but has not taken any meaningful steps to sign any agreements with China, neither made any solid statement in Bangladesh China joint statement in march. One should wonder why only lip service about China road connectivity but no real or meaningful action by Hasina regime????

I think its Myanmar.. Hope things will speed up after Hasina visit.

Idune........It is a big project. Obviously before signing BD govt is evaluating every clause. Why unnecessary frustration?

Its really necessary, lov to travel china through the hiils of chitagong to the hills of myanmar than to china who ever party accomplishes it the journeys gonna be awsome.

When did AWAMY dalals evaluate EVERY CLAUSE of the big projects that it signed with IND? As the saying goes, 'Necessity knows no law'(Obviously not Indian need to us), this project is as much needed as 'Unsuffocating boxed up BDeshis', understand?

A BD-Burma-China road link will become the main blood vein of BD for any length of time in the future. If this becomes the main vein, then the proposed deep seaport will be like the heart of BD's entire economic body. This heart will then have other blood veins that will connect with Burma, India's NE, Nepal and Bhutan.

Without the proposed CXBZ-Kunming road there is no way BD can make best use of its proposed deep seaport whose price tag is $10 billion. It means if there is no BD-China road, there is no new sea port. It is as simple as that. A $10b investement requires an amount of activities that makes the port profitable. Only a Chinese use of this port guarantees a kind of operating profit.

China needs this road even more than BD needs it. Just think how this road will lower the cost of Chinese export of finished goods to middle-east, europe and africa, and its import of raw materials and oil from the middle east. China may build an oil/gas pipeline parallel to this road, and a CXBZ oil terminal can take delivery of this fuel and pump it to China.

Indirectly, the development of India's NE also depends upon this road since BD will not build any deep seaport unless there is a Chinese road through Burma. Only a new port, and not the present-day CTG port, can serve the NE.

The existing port is essentially a small river port located in the Karnafuli river. No big ships can anchor here. So, cargoes are transferred to the smaller ships in Singapore from the big ships. Smaller ships destined for CTG are then forced to anchor at about 10 km away from CTG. They come one by one when the high moon tides allow them to enter the river. So, the present port cannot handle the cargoes destined for Indian NE.

The new deep port is supposed to change all these. Big ocean-going ships will anchor here, and cargoes for China, Burma, Nepal, Bhutan and Indian NE will be unloaded directly in this port. This is how the proposed China road link, new CXBZ port and development of Indian NE are all inter-related.

A MOU between Bangladesh and China for this road does not require Myanmar. So please don't try to bring excuse that typical dejuice generation fall for. As par modality of such project, Bangladesh has to have seperate MOU/agreement with Myanmar. Infact there is already one signed by last BNP govt.

That's why awami regime implementing indian transit in lightening speed. Awami regime just giving lip service to people about China road link to cover up indian indian dalali.

Good going. BD should strengthen ties with China. Its better to get anything from China sans any string attached to it then accepting from those who bully every now and then

Behind all these rapid civilian expansion project in Pakistan and BD lies the CHina secret grandeur strategy of defence. PLA designing to march in numerical superiority to India border in half the time it would take India to get their C17 and chinooks off the ground. Cold start is likely dead on arrival and general kapoor will be remembered as another kaput like nehru. At times of conflict, PLA can be expected to have free pass through Pakistan and will brush aside Bangladeshi resistance if any to use these mega infrastructure. A new history is being written in milltary strategy which may shock the world up next.

What stuff have been smoking bro? PLA's sneak attack to India through Myanmar and BD! :what:

i was under the impression that BD-Burma/Myanmar ties were 'problematic'!?

Some poor people think Myanmar as enemy. I'm not agree with them. While those macho men have nothing to show then they treat Myanmar as enemy.
