Chinese subs in Indian waters sends jitters - report

For the first time, the Indian Navy has strong indications that a fleet of Chinese nuclear submarines is making frequent forays into the Indian Ocean.

22 such Chinese operations have been recorded, one as recently as February, 2013. One submarine was spotted near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Headlines Today has exclusive access to a report from the Indian Navy to the Defence Ministry that says 22 unknown submarine contacts were detected by Indian and U.S sonar in the Indian Ocean.

The assessment is that China is the only other navy capable of operating in the area. The assessment has been confirmed by U.S. and Indian intelligence inputs.

The extent of Chinese submarines’ unchallenged forays into the Indian Ocean can be deeply troubling for the Indian Navy.

Sources tell Headlines Today that one contact with a suspected Chinese submarine took place just 90 km from Indian soil in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Six contacts took place north-west of the Straits of Malacca, 13 south of Sri Lanka and two as far as the Arabian Sea.

The first such Chinese submarine was spotted on sonar in August 2012 during a patrol of Indian and U.S. navy ships, confident that they are the only two navies operating in the southern part of the Indian Ocean.

According to the report, the People’s Liberation Army’s naval wing is deploying the state-of-the art nuclear submarines on a 10,000-mile deepwater run. The launch location is Sanya in the South China Sea.

Official sources say the Chinese submariners could be preparing to sneak into India’s backyard, test Indian Navy’s conviction in keeping them out and probably pioneer a permanent presence in the Indian Ocean region. - IndiaToday

LoL, the indian department of concern screams again.

It is excellent for us to have come to this far side of the ocean on missions for our national and regional interests.

But we have to improve the stealth features. The detection of 22 recorded operations by the usa sonar is way too many.

Anyone knows what Type of our submarines were navigating in the area?

One ship in SCS and Chinese **** in their pants and issue warnings

Oh you remind me of the leased Russian nuclear sub which the cheerleading crew could not steer home without the Russian's help.

exactly it is a routine run into the indian ocean

so your dept of concern should STFU. There is nothing for our casual drives in the deep.

'Indian' ocean is our backyard, we do what we want, when we want. India can keep crying. We have control of Gwadar port in Pakistan, next will be Hambantota port in Sri Lanka, we will get Bangaldesh port and we have access to Mysnmar ports. You can clearly see a string of pearls being established, little by little, give 10 more years and the picture will be alot more clearer.

We have India cornered from all sides, get used to it. Just like South Africa treated India like dirt, we will, can and have sent our Navy to 'Indian' ocean to keep our friends and allies protected from Indian bullying.

Indian ocean is not a single country's property. China has all the rights to navigate freely throughout the intl water of Indian ocean. A future super power like china would naturally make IOR as its own backyard which will also contribute to the stability and prosperity of the region.

Btw the name Indian ocean doesn't make much sense. IOR countries including china should propose a name change like "subcontinental ocean" "Afro-asian ocean" or "Asian ocean". If the regional countries start using a different proposed name, the name will naturally change over time.

Our priority is to keep our friends and allies in South Asia safe from Indian bullying. We want to bring balance to South Asia since all of India's South Asian neighbours want our presence to live in peace. We offer an alternative to Indian thuggery. We never interfere in South Asian countries internal affairs, we are there to protect our friends and allies.

I say 'South Asian Ocean' sounds more inclusive than the outrageous name of 'Indian' Ocean.

And how exactly did "South Africa treat India like dirt"?

first establish control in your real backyard South China Sea, then dream about alien waters like Indian ocean.

If US send one Sub we will see a warning from... ministry of warnings.... lol....

how about renaming SCS into South east asian sea?

I wonder what if the Chinese sub killed Indian fishermen, what would happen? China needs to be careful.
