By Sahidul Hasan Khokon: Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has claimed that defeated forces from the Liberation War are responsible for the recurring attacks on temples in the country.

“People of all religions will have equal rights in this country. But the defeated forces of the Liberation War have not retreated yet. They are still active. They want to mar the spirit of the Liberation War,” he said.

His statement came two days after unidentified miscreants vandalised 14 idols at 12 Hindu temples in northwestern Bangladesh in a series of orchestrated attacks overnight.

“We were not in power for 21 years. In those 21 years, our values were lost, and history was distorted. Our Prime Minister has brought everything right back. Our spirit was a non-communal country, housing for all, education and health guaranteed for all,” assured the home minister.

Alleging conspiracy, he said, “They are repeatedly trying to destroy religious harmony. As the Home Minister, I have given orders to the police force. We will identify them and bring them to book as soon as possible. We spoke to people from the local Hindu community. Their safety has been ensured,” he said.

WHAT HAPPENED ON SUNDAY

"Unidentified people carried out the attacks under the cover of darkness, vandalising 12 idols in 14 temples in three unions (lowest local government tier)," said Bidyanath Barman, a Hindu community leader at Baliadangi) “upazila” or “sub-district” in Thakurgaon.

Barman, the general secretary of the upazila’s Puja Celebration Council, said some of the idols were destroyed while some were found in pond waters along the temple sites.

"We are in the dark about their (culprits) identity but we want to bring them to justice after investigations,” Barman said.

The Hindu community leader and union parishad chairman Samar Chattarjee said the region was always known to be an area of excellent interfaith harmony as “no such heinous incident took place here in the past”.

“The (majority) Muslim community does not have any dispute with us (Hindus)… we just cannot understand who could be these culprits,” he said.

Baliadangi police station’s officer in-charge Khairul Anam said the attacks took place between Saturday night and Sunday dawn at several villages.

"It clearly appears to be a case of an orchestrated attack to disrupt the peaceful situation of the country,” Thakurgaon’s police chief Jahangir Hossain told reporters at one of the temple sites.

The BAL party is desperate. It itself is responsible to create Hindu-Muslim anarchism and blame it on the non_BAL groups. There are no such thing as @Defeated forces in BD. The BAL party invents something non-existing to unsettle the situation.

The BAL Party needs anarchist propaganda to deny people democracy.

East Pakistan shall be liberated. The conflict went cold for a while which may given Mukti Bahani a sense of victory.

Well you need to create a power vacuum to exploit stuff.

Hindidutiwadiwadi is taking it's till and BAL won't be able to hold back the resentment

This Awami League minister is not talking about Pakistani army or anything about Pakistan. He was referring to BNP and Jamat-e-Islami whom they consider defeated force of 1971.

It is better you take care of the present land called Pakistan. I have heard that some people want to bifurcate it in the Pukhtuwala, Afghanistan, and Baluchistan line in the west by excluding Sind, Punjab, and parts of occupied Kashmir at Indian mercy.

Should you not take care of this new line of bifurcation in this north-to-south instead of talking about east Pakistan?

Bangladesh really needs to vote these guys out.

They use 1971 to cover up any kind of incompetency. Nobody in Bangladesh takes it seriously.

People are just tolerating them because the economic situation has been better. But if they can't keep it up in the coming years, they will get the boot.

This was probably done under BAL instructions. She pulls this card every time she is in trouble.
