Pakistan focusing on elimination of child labor

Pakistan's Minister for Labor and Manpower Ghulam Sarwar Khan informed the Senate that the government was committed to the elimination of child labor.

He told the upper house of Parliament on Monday evening that the Employment of Children Act 1991, which prohibits employment of children in specified occupations and processes, was being implemented in letter and spirit.

Throwing light on the various measures taken in that context, he said that some specified target-oriented programs have also been initiated under the aegis of the International Labor Organization's International Program for Elimination of Child Labor.

He said that over 100 rehabilitation centers had been set up in different parts of the country that are being run by Pakistan's Bait-ul Mal.

"Children withdrawn from workplaces are imparted education, training and other facilities such as medical cover and stipends.

This is aimed at bringing them into the mainstream," he said.

Pakistan, a few years ago, had to face a tough time at the hands of some European countries for allegedly involving children in the manufacture of footballs and in the carpet industry and some other sectors.

However, several corrective measures have since then been taken.

The minister pointed out that a project entitled `Activating the Media to Combat Child Labor' was started in 2003 to utilize both the electronic and print media to create awareness in the masses against the use of child labor.

This is a good news. The more kids we have in schools the faster our countries devlop. But the sad news is that a certian law or thing is'nt gonna stop kids from working. What we really need is factories and places where adults can work. When they'll workthey won't need their kids to work and would put their kids in schools instead.
