Fast attack warship INS Karuva commissioned by Indian Navy - The Economic Times

Indian Navy today commissioned highly maneuverable fast attack warship INS Karuva at the Eastern Naval Command here with an objective to thwart asymmetric threats emanating from the sea.

The warship is capable of operating in shallow waters at high speeds and is fitted with enhanced fire power for day-night surveillance and is an extension of the efforts by the Indian Navy to step up vigil post the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes.

"The navy's importance had increased tremendously after the 26/11 terror attacks in protecting the security of the country. The newly commissioned warship (INS Karuva) will definitely strengthen the navy's ability in future," said Commander-in-Chief, Strategic Forces Command Air Marshal K J Mathews while commissioning the warship.

Named after an island situated in Kerala, the 325-tonne INS Karuva, measuring 52 meters, could achieve speed in excess of 30 knots. The warship had a complement of four officers and 39 sailors.

Built for extended coastal and offshore surveillance and patrol the warship is fitted with advanced MTU engines and latest communication sets and follows the footsteps of INS Koswari commissioned on July 12.

INS Karuva, indigenously built by the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, is the tenth such warship built by the GRSE, its Chief Managing Director Rear Admiral (Retd) K C Sekhar said.

Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command Vice Admiral Anup Singh said, Indian Navy has turned into "builders' navy from the buyers' navy" as it is now able to indigenously secure its vessels.

Karuva would be based at the Naval establishment in Karwar under the naval officer-in-charge (Karnataka) and would be deployed for coastal patrol and anti-piracy operations along the Konkan coast and the Lakshadweep group of islands, he said.

Pics please

It will look like a better version of these..

Good news but wouldn't it be more productive for the ICG to be operating such craft and let IN focus on bigger vessels and its "blue-water" capabilities so that it doesn't get tied down in a purely defensive role. And that is the ICG's remit anyway right?

+ IN/ICG are inducting these vessels at an incredible rate, it seems like weekly news. Good to know.

sorry to say...but whats the use of these dockyard queens when our fishermen dont get the protection from attacks by other puny nations ?

far better than IAF

Difference is the level of indigenization of programs for the IN vs. the other services. Ship building is relatively straightforward and requires fabrication of sheet metal/steel and alloys which is a skill that the local workforce can build up quickly. The weapons and combat systems are usually imported and integrated to the hull. In contrast, land systems and aircraft have a much greater high-tech component that requires much higher level of skills and technology infusion.

In Pakistan too, the shipyards in Karachi are continuously churning out smaller platforms for the Navy, MSA and PCG on a regular basis but the complexity resides with the systems for the other two services (I do not mean to say that larger Naval systems are not extremely complex, they are but in most cases they are imported).

Its nice to see that we r concerned about eatern waters too.. But we need more frigates and destroyers in this area..

I still don't think many nations can make these platforms. \DRDO, BEL, etc products or Joint Venture products are slowly being added into these ships.

Kolkota class destoryers

Sensors and
processing systems: IAI EL/M-2248 MF-STAR Multi-mission radar (Active Electronically Scanned Array)
IAI EL/M-2238 L-band STAR surveillance radar
BEL HUMSA-NG sonar
BEL RAWL-02 /Thales LW-08 D-band air search radar ,aft
BEL Nagin active towed array sonar,
BEL Electronic Modular Command & Control Applications (EMCCA Mk4) combat management system

Armament:
• Anti-ship: 4× 4-cell BrahMos UVLM *Joint Venture*
• Air-defence: 2× 32-cell VLS Barak II SAM *Joint Venture*

• CIWS: 4× 30 mm AK-630 gatling guns
• Anti-submarine warfare: Torpedo tubes and 2× RBU-6000

Some of these foreign armaments are also under license.

But making it completely indigenous is going to take some time.

Absoulutly correct- India is one of very few countries that can build such advanced ships and even less (4-5) can make such complex ships as an ACC which India is embarking on.

+ any idea why skme of the IN's smaller ships have their rear's painted black? The larger ships don't but some of the smaller ones do? Is it to do with which command they are assigned to?
