The year 2009 has been the worst ever for human rights in Pakistan and the government, the media and the civil society need to work hand-in-hand to prevent such violations, civil society activists and members of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) said on Thursday.
Observing the International Human Rights Day on Thursday, they said there was a need to make legislation in order to stop the gross violation of fundamental human rights. Labeling 2009 as the worst ever for human rights in Pakistan, they said this year saw the largest number of killings of women and children across different cities of Punjab.
Honour killings: Recently at a National College of Arts seminar, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Secretary General IA Rehman had highlighted the gravity of the growing amount of honour killings in Pakistan.

Data obtained by Daily Times revealed that 119 women were killed in Punjab during the first two quarters of 2009, with the largest number of incidents taking place in Lahore, the so-called hub of cultural and literary activities.
In Lahore, 13 women were murdered ‘in the name of honour’, 11 in Faisalabad, 8 in each of Sargodha and Gujranwala and 9 in Sheikhupura.

Bonded labor, forced marriages, domestic violence, child abuse and exploitation of laborers remained the main human rights issues this year.
