IMSc unveils India's seventh-fastest supercomputer `Annapurna' news

While building the faster super computer ,i'd prefer also if we developed supercomputers that"ll be affordable all over our country,i.e by companies, industries,Universities etc.maybe even colleges.Though i don't see most of India needing such fast supercomputers except for few areas, but with time we will need more of them in various areas.

YouTube - cheapest super computer in the world

PS:Such supercomputers will be of great use when accessing large amounts of data like our Biometric id project.

LOL!But i would be like "Ah,not again" when i see the title in a newspaper :"India develops the World's cheapest supercomputer" :D

Considering the fact that my desktop that was brought just couple month ago has better specs than most of the supercomputers in 1995, your wish is not that far away.

Well, you have to make the complaint to Top500 Supercomputer about giving credit of EKA to HP rather than TATA.
thats just a ranking institute...
the Credit goes to EKA and the scientists who designed it... doesnt matter if some hardware is from HP or intel or anyone else... though they also deserve the credit for making such hardwhare without which neither our nor chinese supercomputer would be possible...

lets celebrate the success... and hope for more success in future..:)

but when we have such computing power in normal use, the ones in the list will be better ones and even more powerful ..:cheesy:

Agree!
keeping Moore's law in mind.

I wonder of what use a common man might have for a supercomputer, except for playing games with high-fi graphics or maybe Brute force attacks. ;)

Something interesting to add:

Few months old article

Pune, India-based Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-Dac) is designing and developing some new technology for their upcoming PARAM supercomputer. The new machine will be ready by 2012 and is expected to break the Petaflop barrier.

The total investment to design and develop a brand new high speed petaflop PARAM supercomputer will be over Rs 1,000 crore,” Rajan T Joseph, director general, C-Dac, told Financial Chronicle. The cost of its maintenance alone will be between Rs 20 and Rs 25 lakh a day, he added.

We will compete with the Americans in this supercomputing technology and offer it at a cheaper rate for the world market,” scientist SP Dixit, director of C-Dac and principal investigator of high performance computing centre, leading the 150 team of scientists, said.

According to Hemant Darbari, executive director of C-Dac, the biggest challenge is overcoming the huge power consumption. The current system at C-Dac, Yuva, requires roughly 1MW of power for 54Tflops.

The PARAM supercomputing with petaflop speed needs a separate power station as it requires 20 mw to run it,” [Darbari] said.

Its silly for any Indian to compare the developments of our supercomputers with the Chinese. The are ahead of us by far margin. They have also developed 32/64bit processors named Loongson for use in their supercomputers, something that we are yet to do...They have done a good job and set us an example to follow.Kudos to the Chinese.
So far as the scope of this thread is concerned, the Indian Scientists have done a great job as well.

People must keep in mind that constructing a super computer is done on the basis of pure necessity, not to etch its name on Guinness Book of World Records,or among the top 10 supercomputer list.It costs a lot of money to build a system, and then maintain it.A super computer these days, takes an entire floor and a dedicated cooling system, not to mention the power requirement to keep it running. If a super computer is running with out using its total potential, then organization is wasting the cpu-cycle time and hence loosing money.
So it is better to construct a smaller system that can be used full up to its potential than a larger system which may not be used fully.
It really depends upon the necessity.

Very good point. Its ridiculous that some people like to compare how powerful their countrie's computer is cas ompare to another country. Give me a break.

If people want to demonstrate achievements, it should be in events like Olympics or World Cup where there is a way to compare results by country. In other stuff such as military weapon or how fast is the super computer should not be compare as these should be acquire on a need basis instead of use for a pissing contest.

Dear Friends,

Supercomputer application is important for our country in some feilds. When earlier we need it for ur weather stations we demanded it from US but US denied it to us so we created our own PARAM PADMA. This machines performs trillion of calculations per seconds these are important for simulations etc. So why my chinese are fighting over it. We just need it we made it thats all.

In 20 years time more's law is going to fail as electron at that level will be unstable hence quantum computing(till now we achieve it at level of 7 electrons) will come into picture . You can imagine that in 20 years of time todays fastest supercomputer will we used by you as general purpose.Technology will be so cheap barcode will be raplaced by chips etc.

@sqlinjection

:):)I like your nick ....used to give me trouble before I started using bind variables...Nowadays I am concerned with XSS.

What are we figting here? Supercomputer, As far as I know is an arrangement of CPU/RAM/BUS to optimize the speed of over all processing to get higher MIPS. This helps us in fastest calculation and processing. If I recall correctly, PARAM-10000 has some 24 CPU cabinets. Now as per the fight, Neither India nor China produce their own CPU chips so for hardwares, we have to rely on external vendors like HP/IBM/Intel/nVidia etc.

Finally, A computer (or even Supercomputer) is only piece of calculator/processor which sufficiently respond with one's request, why to bother for MIPS or no 1 Ranking, this is not beauty contest.

Do u know who a vendor is..???
A company which supplies parts or services to another company. also called supplier.

So yes they supplied the hardware. Similarly the Chinese Supercomputer just revealed also has INTEL and other foreign parts.

But the most important thing , design and the software is Indian. Ony the hardware components are imported

Now rather post something which is contributing to the knowledge.
