Barely a month ahead of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to India next month, New Delhi has made it clear that it expects Beijing to set the record straight on Jammu & Kashmir by reciprocating just the way India has done in the case of Chinese sensitivities in Tibet and Taiwan.

This was conveyed by External Affairs Minister S M Krishna to his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi in the course a 70-minute bilateral conversation on the margins of the Russia-India-China trilateral meet here on Sunday.

However, Yang continued to be ambiguous in his response and did not even raise the issue of New Delhi having frozen high-level military exchanges after Beijing conveyed that the Northern Army Commander would have to be considered for a stapled visa as he is in-charge of a “disputed area”.

Giving out details of these talks, Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao put it bluntly on record: “Our minister (Krishna) referred to the need to show mutual sensitivity and that the Chinese side needs to be sensitive to our concerns in J&K like India has been sensitive to Chinese concerns on Taiwan and Tibet.”

Yang, on his part, sought to give the impression that China has an even-handed approach on the issue and wants India and Pakistan to resolve the matter through dialogue. New Delhi has always questioned this oft-repeated Chinese line because first, there is no way to verify this claim and second, the Sino-Pak relationship is at quite a different level where these questions are largely irrelevant.

Significantly, on India’s quest for permanent membership of the UN Security Council, China on Sunday confirmed its willingness to “increase consultations and communications with India”. The Chinese side had never suggested such discussions in the past and the first indications came in official reaction to US President Barack Obama’s endorsement to India’s candidature.

Besides this, the two sides agreed to formalise an annual meeting between the two foreign ministers. This was first mooted by Krishna when he visited China to mark the establishment of 60 years of diplomatic relations. Rao disclosed that Krishna invited Yang to visit India early next year and that the latter has accepted the invitation.

Krishna also met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and discussed with him the upcoming bilateral visit of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. But in this case, specific deliverables were on the agenda with both sides agreeing to continue the conversations after the India-Russia inter-governmental commission meets in India next week.

Lavrov conveyed Russian support to India’s possible entry into the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. Later, Krishna had dinner along with Lavrov and Yang as the three leaders discussed the situation in Asia-Pacific and the Sino-Russian idea of an open and inclusive security architecture for the region.

Yang also conveyed that Beijing had decided to invite South Africa for the next BRIC (Brazil-Russia-India-China) meet in China. In many ways, Rao indicated that this could be the birth of BRICSA.

India equates Jammu & Kashmir with Tibet?

I think its important to make things straight and no doubts on J&K should remain before both the countries, move forward together.

this is good .... but is not a strong message.....

they cant deal with us while interfering in our sovereignty.... msg should like this "we(india) may review our policy on tibet if china dosent changes its policy on Kashmir"

Chill guys; J&K leaves the list of "disputes" from UNO. So the case of arguing about our state is over.

now let wait and watch,on what ground china will still keep J&K in the list of disputed territory

Jammu and Kashmir is to India as Tibet or Taiwan is to China there is no doubt about it.

We want friendly relations with China but they have to respect India's position as India respect there's on Tibet or Taiwan otherwise they can't compliant if we respond them with same.

I dont know why govt is not giving clear cut msg to china....

It will Improve situation in south Asia

Chinese themselves have holes.......who does not have them.....I dont think chinese will try to do anything stupid anymore......

And both the lions better think that there is more to loose in confrontation.......the sooner they realize the better.....:taz:

Thanks finally someone who feels the same! "Hope for the BEst but prepare for the Worst." If a war broke out b/w Pakistan and India, and even if India wins let's say....it will be extremely vulnerable to CHinese Aggression. Even then there is nothing to say China won't provide real time military info and support to Pakistan. You can see overtime India gains an advantage over Pakistan, china comes to close any gap. India needs to always keep her guard up. As for the other poster who stated China has holes in their defense.....well its nothing compared to our lack of preparedness. India looks like "swiss cheese" compared to them. Their constant support of Pakistan even when faced with logic and proof shows they are not neutral in any bloody way. I want the best in relationships but it's not going to come by being weak. Wake up! Tit for tat.....its about time we equated Taiwan and Tibet to Kashmir. Thank Krishna for finally having some bloody balls. If we go all out and make the effort to acknowledge Tibet as a part of them then the CHinese need to reiterate the gesture. I've heard folks say they recognize Sikkim now...well it took us 30 years to do so. We are weak no doubt about that...but things are changing slowly. We need a better mechanism to allow Indians born in foreign countries to provide insight and planning due to their exposure. India and INdians should strive to think what works for us better not merely follow others blindly. The US finally admitted China was using Pakistan as a hedge against INdia to slow her down. The reality is that the US knew this years before but turned a blind eye. We knew it and no one listened, remember that even now they don;t acknowledge our proof. The strong respect the strong only. This is a life long lesson that should never be forgotten. INdians tend to think the world is all sweet and nice.....wake up and look at our history. We were centuries ahead, but we dearly miscalculated the world. War is war, there is no place for chivalry. Heed my words, world class primary education for the children, stiff penalties for corruption (death by torture use the logic that it kills families in the long run and at the same time it creates a psychological block , E-goverance (like 311 in NYC), A law that bars convicted criminals from politics on a nationals scale, penalties for kidnapping and rape of our women need to be extremely sever and an uniform law that applies to all regardless of religion at least in public and security matters. The nation comes first. All religious nutjobs need to understand that even God (s) will be happy if clean up our act!

Already posted and this changes nothing. Even politics have to be based on the situation on the ground and your countries ability to apply pressure.
