Reacting to reports that the Indian government has urged the Bangladesh government to resume the import of meat from India , AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying that 'while meat shops are being shut down in India for religious sentiments, Modi has no problem making money off of gosht (meat).'

Owaisi further cited that 'Sanghis routinely attack Muslim cattle traders, state governments ban beef and shut down slaughterhouses here but the government wants to help big traders make money from meat export.'

"Bangladesh media reported that @ihcdhaka requested to resume meat imports, including beef/buff. Sanghis routinely attack Muslim cattle traders, state govts ban beef/buff & shut down slaughterhouses here but govt want to help big traders make money. Meat shops are shut down for "religious sentiments" but Modi has no problem making money off of gosht," the AIMIM chief wrote in a tweet.

According to reports, the Indian Embassy in Dhaka wrote a letter to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock over the issue. The letter reportedly said that meat traders in both countries were hit hard by non-shipment of the same. The letter also mentioned that due to the change in the import policy, no frozen bovine meat was imported in the past few months. The Bangladesh government had reportedly stopped the import of frozen meat, especially buffalo meat, from India with the intent to put forward the domestic livestock sector.

The letter reportedly also highlighted that the Bangladesh national budget for the fiscal year 2021-22 imposed a 20% supplementary duty along with an increase in the assessment value from $4-5/kg that was introduced for frozen boneless bovine meat imports from India.

Indian is amongst the largest global exporters of high-quality meat, of a variety that is non-competitive in Bangladesh, the letter noted.

• No one eats buffalo meat in Bangladesh which India wants to export.
