Taking a dig at India's defence expenditure which was lowest compared to countries like China and Pakistan in terms of GDP, a Parliamentary panel said there was an urgent need to build defence capabilities to fight a 'two-front war'.

The panel highlighted huge gaps between the required and existing force levels in it's report which also included that there was a need to allocate adequate budget for the three armed forces as the country was surrounded by difficult neighbours.

The Air Force currently has 34 fighter squadrons against the sanctioned strength of 42 and the number is likely to reduce further to 31 during the 12th Plan period.

India's defence expenditure as compared to some of the European and neighbouring countries indicate that the defence expenditure as percentage of GDP in India is lowest as compared to US, China, Pakistan, Russia and France.

The Committee said military expenditure in terms of percentage of GDP in all these countries except Pakistan is increasing over the years.

The Committee also expressed concern over the fact that of the Rs 66,032 crore allocated for capital acquisitions in 2012-13, only Rs 5,520 crore would be available for new acquisition projects as the remaining would be used for committed liabilities.

The total outlay for defence in the budget for 2012-13 is Rs 1,93,407 crore.

While defense is important, I think we shouldn't rush it. The world is no longer what it was during the early and mid 1900's era. With nuclear weapons and foreign pressure no country is going to go on a full blown war with a nuclear weapon state. The best thing would be slowly upgrading the army and the navy and equipping them with the capability, to be able to hit(nuclear weapon) any where around the world within short notice, this will create a strong deterrence. Then we should work forward and create a better base and start to equip the normal infantry men. Because currently the regular soldier is much ill equipped. There has to be efficiency in the procurement process, and they should have a military panel with government oversight, because frankly the babus don't know cr@p about military equipment and it takes more time to teach them and educate them, than it takes the army to conduct field trials. Moreover the private sector should be given a larger role, its just mind boggling is to how much we spend on foreign equipment, when we have the same quality stuff being made by the private sector.

great this will definitely help expand the indegeneous industry and also procure imp technologies from foreign countries.

According to Gen. Hameed gul, it is a night mare for any military commander to fighting a two front war. If India finds China inevitably as its enemy, India should have re-thought its relationship with Pakistan to avoid a two-front war scenario. But I don't know what makes India think that they can fight a two-front war fighting two nuclear powered countries and would still be able to win and survive. India has twice the number of soldiers as compared to Pakistan but China's women force alone has greater potential than entire Indian force and if you combine both China and Pakistan, you can calculate the combined potential vs Indian Potential.

If you need to learn from a recent example, see how USA and NATO lost their two front war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Is India alone more powerful than combined potential of USA and NATO??? and when India will be fighting against Pakistan and China, the countries with full military potentials and not sanctioned prone Iraq and torn Afghanistan? Seriously, 30 years down the road we will find historians right where India made its pivotal mistake.

But when Leaders go mad, they are hard to cure.

We have had this situation since 1962. And in those 50 years, India has not only progressed but has also had a series of military victories under its belt. Dont think next 30 years would be any different..

Only you can imagine these kind of stupidity cause you cant win against our Army so this type of imagination makes you happy

Its called planning for any eventuality.

Chinese haven't been too keen to fight along with Pakistan in the last three wars, however you may daydream as much. While you are at it, do also draeam up how million plus chinese are going to come over the himalyas.

As for Pakistan army you are right, they aren't much trouble. Last major war 100,000 surrendered after just 1300 were killed, simple maths tells me we may need to kill 6000-7000 Pakistani armymen to make the whole of it surrender...

Are all your country mates trained to talk in such a *know it all story* manner ?
Either cite numbers to support what conclusions u are deriving or simply stick to one liners.

U made no sense at all... what has one nuclear power against two nuclear power got to do with a win/defeat ? especially since the argument you ppl use is, one nuclear bomb is enough to send a huge country like India to stone age" ?

Also, what mistake are you talking of ?

Any link for the no of women soldiers in service in PLA ?

Simply blabbering without facts makes you a cheerleader nothing more.

No but this kind of victory makes you guys happy. We don't sell war hatred for election neither our leaders talk about fighting wars. India knew it cannot defeat Pakistan and many times when it wanted to attack, it restrained because of a reason. When Indian didn't initiate a war against a country which is 1/4 of its potential, it is looking to combine it with a country with 3 times potential, fight and still win the fight. Super Imaginative!

I dont think there will be a full fledged war with China. With China there will be a small skirmish across the border and with Pakistan also the possibility of an all out war is very less even if it happens will not last for more than two months.

So basically we need to be prepared even though the probability of happening is low.

India never ever start any war.

And this is about preparation for worse condition if in any condition (this imagination) become reality so we should be prepare for that...... Agni5, Akula, Arihant, K5 all are part of our preparation

I am amused, is history banned or something in Pakistan?

How come so many Pakistanis here believe they havent ever been defeated,, I even heard some say they won in 65!!

Did nobody tell you guys how US was there to save your country from being run over every time?

For the women strength of Chinese Military, try goggling it. Even if you find their woman force is equal or slightly lesser in numbersthan yours, will that justify your stance of two-front war scenario? :) Common mate, your number of posts might be few but don't make your post sound that immature.
