WASHINGTON: As Pakistan ratified the peace deal with the Taliban in restive Swat Valley; an eminent American think-tank has warned the move would increase the tensions between Islamabad and Washington.

Stratfor, the US think-tank, also said the Obama Administration could even move to expand its unilateral air strikes inside Pakistan.

'Not only will Pakistan see greater domestic turmoil as a result of the passage of this law, but the new regulation will further aggravate tensions between Islamabad and Washington, complicating Western efforts to combat the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan,' Stratfor said.

'The United States may even move to expand its unilateral airstrikes and covert operations deeper into Pakistani territory,' it said, adding that the signing into law the peace deal with Pakistani Taliban would virtually convert the Swat Valley into a Taliban territory.

Pakistan had accepted or had the deal with taliban so that there can be peace in the region and they can consentrate more on other fronts. But the things have not gone the way it was expected. :tsk:

the fact remains US is loosing in afghanistan.... its this thinkin of their's which creates problem for us. they talk about reconciliation but they never practice it. u cant win a war without having locals on ur side. this shariah act has fulfilled an old demand of ppl of swat. this was the reason y ppl were supporting talibans. now if talibans dont give up arms and create trouble, then GoP will have high moral ground which will make it easier to defeat taliban. this time ppl wont support taliban. if we would have carried on listenin to wat US was sayin, definately we would have become weak. and gov having public support is not weak.

How exactly is that a sign of weakness, letting people decide their own faith. Now that the deal is signed, the coming days will be interesting why because now certain powers who oppose such deals and want to portray as a sign of weakness for Pakistan will do everything in their power to create such an atmosphere of mistrust that the deal falls apart causing an embarrassment to the GOP and the very same forces will say " see we told you its not going to work".
People should watch out for black sheep's within them and should remain careful of them.

just a small correction... its not a deal, its a law which has been passed. this law cant be changed. it wont be easy for US to convince zardari to reverse his decision coz this law has got backing of nationa assembly.
the only thing which can happen now is that taliban wont disarm and gov will have to take action against them. but results will be different this time coz ppl will be taking gov side. this was the rit way fwd and glad we didnt listen to US

That 100 percent true. We all hope this works and peace will be one again restore in Pakistan but if not then we know who to come after with support from local people.

That black sheep will be India RAW or US CIA .putting TTP to another objective in the name of Islam.

It shows the complexity and how simplistic US thinks. Wasn't US forgetting exit strategy in Irac? How stupid can you get...

Making a deal with someone observing the ground realities and then acting accoridng to the direction of the wind of time is NOT weakness at all.

Pak govt has taken a strong step and it was wise enough to take this step now, however things would have been in better shape had the govt considered the matter's seriousness and the masses' will a bit earlier in time.

Anyways as they say, "Better Late Then Never".

can any pakistani friend here confirm me which other state or part of pakistan has the support of locals when it comes to sharia law.
members here have argued that it was the locals who supported this specific law so it was implemented fine does it imply then that the taliban would not spread its influence or go on capturing other towns outside the area and try to implement the same rule?

also what happens when if the taliban doesnt give up its arms then wont pakistan be in state of a civil war? what will be the line of action then? why did the goverment of pakistan need the help of the taliban to implement this rule this could have been done even without negotiating will taliban then the question of IF would not have arised isnt it ?

swat was a princely state till 60s or 70s (not sure). when it became a part of pakistan their law was abolished. since then they have been demanding their very same law which was simpler and cheaper. now there is no such demand in other parts of pakistan. and if there is, its only restricted to few ppl. talibans can only spread their influence where they ll find some public support which apparently they are failing to find. they did try to establish their influence in bajur but bec they lacked local support they were finally crushed. same goes for other parts of fata where locals have formed lashkars to fight talibans.

now bec the main demand of locals have been met, so if talibans dont lay down their arms gov will be in a much better position to take action against them. locals will be on gov side. and i think taliban won just lay down their weapons and finally gov will have to take some action. but this was a necessary step to win against them.

and yes you are rit, if gov would have met local demand of shariah law a dacade back then today we would not be seein ourself negotiating with taliban.
