The third biggest port in the world.
The $6 billion port would ship cargo coming into Faw across land, via Turkey and into Europe. From China to Germany, the trip would only take five days, according to the article. By building a railway from Basra to Turkey, the port has a huge advantage, making the more costly ship routes round the Horn of Africa and through the Suez Canal less attractive.

Alstom will build the new Baghdad-Basra which will eventually be extended to Al faw peninsula connecting Faw to the railway in Turkey all the way to Berlin.

Awesome project. Best wishes to the NEW Iraq.

Just a correction, in terms of handing capacity, it will be the 17th largest in the world and not the third. Its about need and efficiency and not about breaking records The port will include oil terminals and a naval base. There is also an oil and gas free trade zone and a large "logistics city" planned not too far from the port. It will be the second largest in the middle east after Jebel Ali Port in in the UAE. But if it is completed it may start competing with Jebel Ali If the train tracks to Turkey are built.

Anyways I think it wont be completed until 2018-2020 because of all the complications, still many years ahead.

I did not believe "3rd largest" aswell, though the ambition is to grow larger, ofc they cannot know how big it will be before it will be operational..

Will it be passing through Syria?

There are 2 problems, passing through Northern Iraq without going into Syria exposes the train/transport vechiles to the PKK bomb attacks, they have been bombing oil pipelines to sabotage deals.
Going through Syria largely avoids PKK area or atleast it will be going through controlled area, though as you know Syria is in war and no one knows howlong this will last.
But they have time, this project will take a long time.
