Three Indigenous Aircraft Carriers being built at the Cochin Shipyard

well their defence budget is >>100bill. and ours is ~30bill . its just that we cant afford supercarriers right now ... maybe once IAC-1 is completed we can have something in the range of 60-80k tons....
i was just saying that right now we should focus on nuke-subs and frigate rather than QE or KITTY-HAWK....
comments awaited........

Hey! guys i have one question to you can anybody tell me which is cost effective a/c diesel power or nuk power to operate.

although diesel is more cost effective but we should go for nuke ones only because of availability of diesel in crucial times as we all know who supplies oil and which side they would take in time of crisis.......

Don't you forget something? Even if the carrier has a nuclear propulsion, its carrier group won't! That's a fact that many people forget while prefering a nuclear carrier, but the carrier will go nowhere without its escort and will depend on diesel supply for them again.
Imo a nuclear propulsion is a good idea for bigger, or super carriers. For those medium class carriers that IN are building and not even for the new british carriers they seem to be necessary.

Indian Navy prefers Emals on new aircraft carriers

Indian Navy is inclined to fit the under development Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (Emals) on its new aircraft carriers, instead of ski jumps.

Emals is currently being developed by General Atomics for future US aircraft carriers.

Both, the currently operational but aging INS Viraat, and the on-order-since-for-ever INS Vikramaditya are fitted with ski jumps to assist take off.

"When catapult technology improves, we are looking at building conventional carriers with electric rather than steam catapults," says former Chief of Naval Staff Adm. Sureesh Mehta.

The Navy has projected a requirement of at least five carriers to effectively patrol the country's 7,500 km. (4,660 mi.) coastline.

Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) is currently building INS Vikrant, a 40,000 ton aircraft carrier designed with the help of Italian company Fincantieri under Project 71. Work on the second aircraft carrier is expected to start before the first one is delivered to the Navy by the end of 2014.

INS Viraat?

The last pic shows the french Porte Avions 2 class, which is similar to the Queen Elizabeth class, but with a CATOBAR config.

Porte Avions 2 - Naval Technology

With the interest of IN in EMALS and E-2D this config is more likely than the british ski-jump config.

provided we buy F-35, which we probably will...

The 3 indigenous Vikrant class will be INS Vikrant(first one), INS Virat and INS Vishal.

INS Vishal might be a super carrier (90K T displacement )

Gonna look like this?

No, IN prefer STOBAR, or CATOBAR carriers and especially the arrested landing is important, because neither N-LCA, nor Mig 29K, or most of the fighters that are in the new RFI can land vertically.

I think they will go for bigger carriers directly after INS Vikrant, because 2 medium class carriers (including the Gorshkov) will be enough for the Indian Ocean area and the bigger carrier is meant for longer range missions.
Also interesting that there are still reports that IN has interest in the design of the British Queen Elizabeth carriers, which can be configuered as CATOBAR (posted pics in earlier posts) carriers too. So even if we don't buy their second carrier, we could have similar design.
Oh btw, in the German version of rian.ru I read yesterday, that after Russia is buying the French Mistral class carrier, India shows interest too!
That's an interesting point, because IN is lacking an amphibious/helicopter carrier, be it for troop landing, humanitarian, or even the anti piracy missions, such a carrier would be a great addition. If IN want's to be the major force in the Indian Ocean we need such capabilities too!

If Indian Navy is certainly looking for an all new carrier borne fighter jet, then it should not do the mistake of purchasing something like Mig-29K.
