U.S. Questions Turkey's miltary exercise with China

From Zaman: Turkish and Chinese militaries recently conducted a joint aerial exercise in central Anatolia, the first such exercise involving the air forces of NATO member Turkey and China.

The joint exercise was part of Turkey’s Anatolian Eagle maneuvers, which have so far been carried out jointly with US, other NATO countries and Israel. They took place sometime this month in the central Anatolian province of Konya, where Anatolian Eagle maneuvers traditionally take place, Today’s Zaman has learned. Turkish F-16s and Chinese SU-27s and Russian-made MIG-29s took part in the joint exercise, staging a mock dogfight in central Anatolian airspace. The exercise comes ahead of a planned visit by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao to Turkey next month, which officials say will boost relations to a new level.

From Hurriyet: The Turkish and Chinese air forces secretly participated in a military drill in Konya as part of the “Anatolian Eagle” war games, prompting a reaction from Washington, daily Taraf reported Thursday. ...

The U.S. administration reportedly contacted the Turkish foreign and defense ministries and asked why the drill was conducted and what kind of maneuvers were practiced.

An unexpected military cooperative exercise between China and Turkey has caught the eye of Washington-based analysts.

The two air forces were involved in a joint air exercise in the central Anatolian province of Konya, the first such exercise involving the air forces of China (People’s Liberation Army Air Force – PLAAF) and NATO member Turkey.

Part of the significance is that the PLAAF recently demonstrated major advances in long-range strike during their own “Peace Mission 2010.”

The latest joint exercise, “Anatolian Eagle,” in the past has been conducted jointly with the U.S. Air Force, other NATO air forces and the Israeli Air Force.

Ankara’s Zama newspaper reported that Turkish F-16s and Chinese Su-27s staged a mock dogfight. Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao plans a visit to Turkey next month where several agreements on economic and cultural cooperation are expected to be signed. Chinese aircraft, including the JF-17 export fighter, stopped in Turkey to refuel on the way to last summer’s Farnborough air show.

Turkey flies 200 F-16s, 150 RF/F-4s and 75 F-5s.

Another sign that Turkey is changing its international stance is modification of its security policy to remove some of its neighboring countries from a list of those considered as national security threats and the exclusion of the IAF from its exercises.

Looks like you need Uncle SAM permission on who you can make friends with. LOL

Well the same can be said about China. They complain when the U.S does exercises with South Korea.

China only complained when USA, Korea and Japan want to do aggressive military exercise involving an American Aircraft Carrier right next to China's coastline.

Wouldn't uncle Sam complain if China and Mexico did military exercise near Sans Francisco's coastline ?

The Islamic Republic of Iran has reportedly opened its airspace to Chinese warplanes taking part in joint military maneuvers with Turkey.

Ankara and Beijing conducted the drills in Turkey's Central Anatolia region last month.

The war games, codenamed the Anatolian Eagle, were the first involving Turkey and China. Turkey had previously carried out Anatolian Eagle maneuvers with the US and other NATO members as well as Israel.

Turkish F-16, Chinese Su-27 and Mig-29 fighter jets took part in mock dogfights during the drills.

The maneuvers come ahead of a planned visit by Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao to Turkey.

Turkey and China took their first step in military cooperation in the late 1990s with joint missile production, manufacturing weapons with a 150-kilometer range, the Hurriyet daily reported on its website.

The multinational Anatolian Eagle exercise is hosted by the Turkish Air Forces and is aimed at boosting aerial cooperation and training. The exercises have been performed since June 2001.

is it possible for the chinese planes to land and refuel in iran?

I guess the ironic thing is that China is also holding live fire exercises in the Yellow Sea, with Australia .

first you buddy take out the world map .south China sea is too close to China
I know(they also do it many times) China would be very OK if US does exercises with South Korea in Japanese sea , the south korea another side coastline . if you just want to show for north korea you can easily get you goals as well .there also near the North korea .

The Sino-Turk exercise took place on Turkish sovereign land with full permission of hosting party.

US-Asia exercise took place in disputed waters with no approval from largest party of dispute.

big difference..one heading east other heading west..cant compare both!

We'd first have to help Mexico build up her navy but I just can't imagine how the tea-partiers would react. Illegal Immigrants + Red Chinese commies - that is like Sarah Palin's dream come true :rofl::rofl:.

Sorry, Sir. Your logic is seriously flawed, causing us to suspect whether you are a high school drop-out.

Turkey and US are military allies in term of NATO. Now Turkey and China have a joint exercise and US complains to his ally Turkey.

S. Korea and China are military “enemies” due to Korea war. Now S. Korea and US have a joint exercise and China complains to his enemy S. Korea.

Is it now clear to you that how strikingly different the two cases are, instead of "the same"?
