Yemenis hold huge anti-US rally in Sana’a over drone attacks

Thousands of Yemenis have taken to the streets in the capital, Sana’a, to protest against deadly US assassination drone attacks in their country.

Chanting anti-US slogans, they also condemned what they called continued American interference in their country’s internal affairs.

The demonstrators also chanted slogans against Israel and called for the boycott of American and Israeli goods.

The protest rally comes a day after three people were killed and two others injured in a US drone attack in the village of Beit al-Ahmar in the Sanhan region, 15 kilometers southeast of the capital.

Yemenis have staged several anti-US protests over Washington's interference in Yemeni affairs and its drone attacks in the country in the past few months. The protestors have called on the government to cut all ties with Washington over US air intrusions into Yemen.

Washington uses its assassination drones in Yemen, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Somalia, claiming that they target the terrorists. The attacks, however, mostly lead to massive civilian casualties.

The United Nations has censured the US drone attacks as targeted killings, stressing that they flout international law.

According to a recent report by Yemen’s National Organization for Defending Rights and Freedoms, over 300 people have been killed in US drone attacks carried out in the southern regions of the country so far in 2012.
