The effectiveness of a Carrier depends upon its power projection capabilities, defensive capabilities, and range.

But the big difference with tanks and carriers are that carriers have a whole array of defense ships that have missile defense, and the carrier itself have missile defense. And with the rapid development in the BMD's and missile shield technology, it will be pretty hard to hit a carrier. Considering that even with a stealth cruise missile you will have to get pretty close to the carrier and, you might even get caught by the Carrier defense task force.
