Pakistan Ship Building

And now China is building ships 10 x times the size at 10 times the speed

Steel Cutting Ceremony of 16 T Bollard Pull Pusher Tugs being built for Pakistan Navy, was held at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) on 10 Oct, 2019. Commander Coast Vice Admiral Muhammad Fayyaz Gilani HI(M) graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from Government of Pakistan, Pakistan Navy, Corporate Sector and KS&EW.

The Tug has an overall length of 21 meters with a displacement of 255 tons. It has maximum speed of 10 knots and propelled by 2 Diesel Engines. It is fitted with a very robust fendering arrangement for all round tugging operations. It has also a unique fendering below waterline to ensure safe movements of submarines.

On the occasion, the Honorable Chief Guest said that it is indeed a loud manifestation of indigenization policy being pursued by MoDP. He appreciated Karachi Shipyard for their valuable contribution towards attaining goal of self-reliance in the field of ship building. He highlighted an important segment of marine industry i.e. fishing industry and said that KS&EW has full capacity to construct modern fishing trawlers / boats and urged provincial governments to revamp this area through potential of this solitary shipyard of the country. .

Earlier MD KS&EW, Rear Admiral Ather Saleem SI(M) in his welcome address thanked Pakistan Navy and MoDP for their continued support. He said that in the past KS&EW has already constructed various tugs ranging from 10 to 40 Tons Bollard Pull capacities. He highlighted that in parallel to the Ship Repair and Gen. Engineering activities, various shipbuilding projects including 1500 Tons Maritime Patrol Vessel for Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Fast Attack Craft (Missile) No. 4 for PN and Bridge Erection Boats for Pakistan Army are being executed. Preparation of mega projects of construction of 4 submarines and 2 MILGEM Class Corvettes for Pakistan Navy are being made. He assured that KS&EW is committed to complete these challenging projects on time, meeting international quality standards

Pakistan Navy launches indigenously-designed FAC (M)-4 at Karachi Shipyard event

KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: The Navy held the launching ceremony of Pakistan's first indigenously-designed Fast Attack Craft (Missile) — or FAC (M)-4 — at the Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Limited (KS&EW) in the metropolis' West Wharf, the director-general of the Navy's public relations said in a statement issued Wednesday.

According to the Navy's statement, Defence Production Minister Zubaida Jalal was the event's chief guest.

A state-of-the-art, multi-mission vessel, the FAC (M)-4 is 63-metre long and has a displacement of over 560 tons. It is propelled by four shafts, has 30-knot speed, and will be equipped with indigenously-developed, anti-ship missiles and sensors.

The vessel has been indigenously-designed by Maritime Technologies Complex (MTC), the statement added.

Addressing the event, Jalal, the defence minister, congratulated the Pakistan Navy, MTC, and the KS&EW for the remarkable achievement towards the national goal of indigenisation and self-reliance.

She said the KS&EW is one of the few public sector industries, which have made remarkable turnaround in the last decade and transformed into a sustainable profit generating entity of the Ministry of Defence Production.

Jalal added that in view of future economic growth of the country, the ministry is vigorously pursuing establishment of new shipyards.

She noted that this Missile Craft will effectively safeguard the sea frontiers of the country.

Earlier, KS&EW Managing Director Rear Admiral Ather Saleem thanked the MoDP and the Pakistan Navy for their continued support.

He added that during the recent years, the KS&EW has completed various projects at par with international quality standards. As a result, the Pakistan Navy has reposed its confidence in the Karachi Shipyard by awarding construction contracts for MILGEM Class ships, HANGOR class submarines, and Bollard Tugs.

Construction of both Tugs has commenced while preparations for construction of MILGEM Class ships and HANGOR class submarines are progressing as per plan, he said, assuring at the same time that the KS&EW is committed to complete all these challenging projects on time, within allocated budget, and while meeting international quality standard.

The ceremony was attended by large number high ranking officials and dignitaries from federal and provisional governments, the Pakistan Navy, and KS&EW.
 
Good news, a step in the right direction for sure. Lets see if they can keep this up, and design and build something bigger !!

We provide integral services through a highly qualified workforce with wide experience. KS&EW is well equipped with docks, cranes, as well as the best tools and machinery to undertake above and underwater repairs.

Over 5000 vessels of national and international origin have been repaired so far. We regularly undertake steel renewal, major structure repairs, machinery overhauls and underwater repairs for Pakistan Navy, Pakistan Maritime Security Agency, Karachi Port Trust, Port Qasim Authority and a number of foreign clients.

For above water repairs quay walls with a total length of 665 meters are available served with two luffing cranes and allied facilities.

KS&EW carried out emergency repairs on a 250,000 TDW vessel at outer anchourage as the vessel, because of its size, could not enter Karachi Harbour. Similarly any alteration / conversion on hull / super structure can be undertaken. For Marine Boilers, Insulation, Lagging, Flooring & Brick Work can be carried out at the yard. Facilities also exist for repairs of Steam and Motor Vessels both Main and Auxiliary Machinery and all types of Marine and Stationary Boilers.

Ship Lift and Transfer System


In order to enhance the capacity for shipbuilding and ship repair activities installation of ship lift and transfer system is in progress. Installation is completed in 2018. Ship lift and transfer system will enable Karachi Shipyard to undertaken construction and repair of multiple vessels simultaneously.

Pakistan Marines have received two Military Assault Boats (MABs) produced at PN Dockyard with transfer of technology from Polish company Techno Marine. These boats, with displacement of 12 Tons, will be used in Sircreek for patrolling duties.
