President inaugurates LEJ National Science Information Centre

KARACHI: November 27, 2006: President General Pervez Musharraf on Monday said that the inauguration of Latif Ebrahim Jamal National Science Information Center showed the physical manifestation of growing interest in philanthropy along with the assertion of the fact that it is a knowledge based world and no economy could grow without progress in science and technology.

The president stated this, while addressing the inaugural ceremony of Latif Ebrahim Jamal National Science Information Center here at Karachi university.

LEJ National Science and Information Center is an information dissemination center with state-of-the-art facilities and access to latest information resources, like educational intranet connectivity and video conferencing facility for live lectures from western universities.

President Pervez Musharraf, while talking about government's strategy regarding education said that we aim to promote education at all levels, that is to promote primary education, secondary education and technical education.

"This way we will have a solid foundation and a solid superstructure," he noted.

Musharraf said, "We want to create synergy between higher education and technical education, higher education will produce excellent engineers and the Technical education will produce excellent technicians and this is accordance of our industrial needs"

He further elaborated that to implement the strategy the government was opening nine world class universities in Pakistan with the help of Europe and Asia, adding that a university with France assistance had already been opened.

"We aim to open four universities in Punjab and three each in Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP", he said.

This need investment of Rs 250 billion in the next 10 years and government is financing it with the objective to promote scientific and technical education in the country that will in the turn promote the industry, the President added.

Musharraf announced to donate Rs 30 million for the infrastructure development of the project and termed it as an excellent example of public-private partnership.

The inaugural ceremony was also attended by Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Kan, Chief Minister Sindh Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, Chairman HEC and advisor to PM on Science and Technology, Dr Attaur Rehman, VC Karachi University and others.
