US to boost Gulf presence after Iraq pullout: NYT

WASHINGTON: The United States is planning to bolster its military presence in the Gulf after it pulls out its remaining troops from Iraq, the New York Times reported in its online edition on Sunday.

President Barack Obama said on Oct. 21 that he had decided to withdraw all US troops from Iraq by the end of the year and the paper said that US military officers and diplomats worried that the withdrawal could bring instability to the region.

It said Washington was negotiating to maintain a combat presence on the ground in Kuwait and was considering deploying more warships in the area.

No one at the Pentagon was immediately available to comment.

The United States also wanted to expand its military ties with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) — Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, it said.

The proposal needed approval by GCC leaders who are due to meet in the Saudi capital Riyadh in December, the paper said.

Bush was pretty stupid Iraq balanced Iran now Iraq is Iran satellite state, the whole affair Blame Iraq for 9/11 and Saddam changing the Petro dollar to Euro, the wars have weakened America almost 6,000 troops dead from the WOT and hundreds of thousands wounded, the wars + plus other effect lead to an era of stagnation in the USA decline and weakening of the USA.

Iran is gaining influence in Iraq no why would Iran send troops ? Post Saddam Iraq is rising in Shiism, Iran-Iraq will be allies.

About shiism: Al Sistani was always against a leader so he was against the regime we have in Iran.
The shiism is clearly not enough to unite the two countries.
And being shia didn't avoid the people of Iraq to fight the Iranian shias during the war.

Iraq is doing business with Iran and it is good but Iraq is doing good business with China, Turkey and many other countries.

I have one worry about the opposition: they support the terrorist group of radjavi , which in return promised them to pay penalties for the war !! when saddam never paid the penalties that he should have paid for the war he started.

Iran having proxies most in shia groups. But it is not enough for making an ally.
Iraq is not and won't be an ally. We have a good relation with them: it is quite enough. Lile we should with saudis: a relation of respect.
