THE PROBLEM WITH superpowers, wrote Henry Kissinger in 1979, is that they often act like "two heavily armed blind men feeling their way around a room, believing himself in mortal peril from the other, whom he assumes to have perfect vision."

This principle from the realpolitik statesman, that the world's most powerful nations are often oblivious to their opponents' deep dysfunctions, may explain data compiled by U.S. News as a part of its 2018 Best Countries ranking, breaking down how respondents from particular nations view the world.

Though the U.S. ranks first among the world's most powerful nations according to a majority of all respondents, Americans themselves do not consider their homeland to be the most prominent international player. Rather, they see China as most powerful, followed by Russia and then the U.S.

If Russia cant revive its power like it did in early 19th century or after WW2, then i will favor USA superpower status rather then Chinese. Dont believe them.

They torture their own citizens (Tiananmen massacre, mass labour camps) what will stop them from torturing other nations?

^ as opposed to imperialist Russia or commie russia obliterating entire nations and peoples for the past few hundred years??? get a life dude and stop wasting bandwidth

And that comes from a British, which enslaved 1/4 of the world and steal other people heritage because it dont have its own (perfect example is British Museum with only 5% of English/British culture).

That is a strange perception if you are real Russian...We heard that Russian like Chines due to anti US sentiment throughout Russia

I say all 3 options kept Russia down Russia should have kept much of its industries from the USSR era but failed too except for gas and arms issue is demographics of Russia is too low for that they would need migrants and Russians being Slavs aren't fond of Caucausians or Central Asians
I think China's been more powerful than Russia for quite a while.

You can than Deng Xiaoping for that

China as a country and civilization is much older than Russia so no surprise there. The only surprise is that China was behind Europe despite the fact China invented the printings, gunpowder and rockets also china explored the oceans thousands years before the Europeans did in the 16th century

Two major reasons

1) Chinas decline was an anomoly in human history, driven by external factors. It was only a matter of time before things turned back to the normal state of affairs due to the nations huge population size and relatively safe geographic position (surrounded by Himalaya, the sea and the Gobi desert)

2) The Soviet Unions economic model was unsustainable in the long run, and so it was only a matter of time before reality struck.

Russians dont like China they see it as a marriage of convenience mind the PRC is the main reason the USSR broke apart

But isn’t Russia by accident helping lift China with this marriage of convenience and sale of gas at cheap prices? Even if the marriage is 55-45 in favour of China, that still means they are opening up the gap on Russia and the others
