The Supreme Court has raised an important question at a hearing pertaining to a medical college admission case in Karachi. “Why should a hafiz-e-Quran student (a person who memorizes the Holy Quran) be given extra marks for university admissions?” Justice Qazi Faez Isa said on Monday.

A student from the Bolan University of Medical and Health Sciences, Quetta, has petitioned the top court after he being denied admission.
At a hearing on January 8, the petitioner, said that if he is given 20% additional marks for being a hafiz-e-Quran, he would be easily enrolled to the varsity on merit.
In 1987, Pakistan passed a law under which hafiz-e-Quran candidates are awarded 20 extra marks at every level after matriculation.
The apex court has sought clarity on the issue. “How are admissions into medical and other colleges linked to being a hafiz-e-Quran? Why should 20 marks extra be given on this basis?” Justice Isa asked.
“We believe that memorising the Quran is sacred. And it is a plus point when someone wants to become the imam of a mosque or a religious lecturer,” he remarked. “But how can a hafiz-e-Quran be a better doctor?”
The petitioner told the court that it was a complicated subject.

“Why are you scared of Islam? Religion is supposed to make things easier for us,” Justice Isa replied.
The apex court, consequently, dismissed the petition and decided to hold a separate hearing to discuss the matter. Notices have been issued to the Pakistan Medical Commission and others. “This is an important matter. A decision can be reached after discussion,” the Justice Isa said.

I dislike Faiza with a passion but he is right here
because Hafiz-e-Quran are mostly from underprivileged and poor families who have to spent extra time and effort to memorise Quran and at the same time continue their regular studies.

Staying away from studies for 3 years, and not attending school for such long period, government should reduce 20 marks or force them to take all classes as other student does.

We are not there yet. If I remember correctly, it was NS who extended the quota system for another 2-3 decades in Pakistan.
We will never be there if we dont end it

Killing merit is what failed institution like PIA and why do we have so many peons and class iv employees? Agar state aisey hi chalani hy to sab privatize kardo
Why should a judge be given a car and a driver besides salary?
I agree

this is Baghdad all over again!

our Mullahs and our beloved cute liberals are busy arguing if kawa is halal or not while country is getting "raped" "destroyed" by Mafias and corruption people!!

gg bastards!

And an indicator or dedication, hard work and great memory.

Ok. That doesn't qualify you or me to be a doctor. The student can show their dedication, hard work, and memory by memorising content from their textbooks if they want to score high marks and be a doctor. However, I'm sure religious institutions will give extra credit.

Because hifz is not an indicator of medical skills or knowledge. It is an indicator of how good you are at memorising the Quran (and understanding it)
Memorizing and understanding are two different things ... Understanding only for scholars those who spend ages in research and studying others' research papers, before any compilations...

That's why I put understanding in brackets.

99.9% of Hafiz in Pakistan don't even know the meaning of Ayah they are reciting, implementation is a distant dream!
I personally know many hafiz i quran (in UK and in Pakistan) who drink, do drugs, f anything on two legs given half a chance, and have achieved absolutely nothing else in their lives other than the claim to know quran by memory.

I hope you guys know the punishment in Islam for slandering. Even if it isn’t a slander I hope you know the punishment for exposing sins of one publicly. Don’t slander many innocent hafiz’s on the basis of 1 or 2 bad people you seen

Here I agree too with this judge ... even he is unable to prove his foreign wealth. In Islam equal opportunity for all ...

We are: ISLAMIC Republic of Pakistan
We are NOT: SECULAR Republic of Pakistan
That means nothing in this context

Maybe this is why the country is going to shit, instead of putting people into important positions based on meritocracy, it's instead done on something completely unrelated

Have fun receiving your heart surgery from someone who couldn't achieve the bare minimum requirements to qualify even for med school, but memorised the quran 🤡

Even better put those people in charge of Project Azm, see how far you get...

Deluded people I swear

My guy this is completely unrelated to Islam, this is academic study related to a STEM field

The amount of Quran you've memorised has 0 impact, there's a reason why there are preset requirements because those are the actual things which matter

Which type of economist can fix the country's economy?

1. The guy who couldn't achieve the basic pass mark, but got in because of his Quran memorisation

OR

2. The guy who is actually qualified and has shown an acceptable standard of expertise in the field?

Pakistan is full of jahil people who are religious fanatics which is why it will never progress. There's a time and place for Islam, and your STEM exam mark is certainly not the place for it.
Hafiz are more intelligent than normal students thori relaxation main koi burai nhi ha
Being a Hafiz is not a measure of intelligence and it's certainly not a measure of knowledge in a certain STEM field.

The measure is the exam itself, hence why we have it in the first place.

Another example of why this country is a shit hole lol

how is this guy sitting as a judge after all those references

It's a good deed, same incentive should be given for athletes. Ignorance of such incentives have pushed the youth away from sports and also pushed main streamed educated from Quran. Such incentives are wide spread even in USA many students that are good at sports and suck at formal textbook education make to big universities and it pays off in many ways.

In fact the question of why shouldn't be here, rather why not.
