The Supreme Court on Friday (January 21) dismissed CBI's plea for death penalty to Dara Singh, convicted for burning to death Australian missionary Graham Steins and his two minor sons in Orissa's Koenjhar district in January 1999. The apex court upheld life sentence awarded by Orissa High Court.

After the SC verdict, Graham Staines close friend said that Dara Singh should repent for whatever he has done.

“The SC has given its verdict and we are happy that justice has been given in any form. Life is very precious. If a person has done something wrong and the law has acknowledged it. It is for the court to decide what punishment should be given to the accused. The court has decided to give life imprisonment and we are happy that justice has been given," added Staines friend.

Dara had filed an appeal challenging his conviction and the life sentence awarded to him. The appeals were admitted by the apex court in October 2005.

On May 19, 2005, the Orissa High Court had commuted to life imprisonment the death penalty imposed by the sessions court on Dara Singh for the murder of Staines and his two minor sons -- Philip, 10, and Timothy, 6. Along with Dara, another person Mahendra Hembram was convicted in the case.

However, the High Court had acquitted 11 others who were awarded life terms by the trial court in the case. Dara Singh and Mahendra Hembrom were found guilty of burning to death Staines and his sons, who were sleeping inside a van outside a church, at Manoharpur village in Koenjhar district of Orissa on January 22, 1999.

The trial court in Khurda had in September 2003 convicted all the 13 accused. While Dara Singh was awarded death sentence, others were given life imprisonment. However, the High Court had commuted their death sentences to life imprisonment.

Ghrahma Staines was involved in conversions of tribal people of Odisha so Christianity and had a pretty bad reputation among non Christian tribals who are agitated by proselytization activities of foreign missionaries .When things got beyond the breaking point and he was murder by tribal.

Killking him and kids was wrong ,but for simple mined tribal people whose lives had been destroyed by Ghrahma Staines it meant revenge.

Wrong, the SC has clarified that life means life, no automatic release after 14 years.

Source please. I have not seen anything suggesting that the SC has decided that way because of the conversion factor.

U are an outsider who doesn't know the background behind this incident ,so don't get uppity about it. There are lots of things that don't come in the mainstream indian English media which is obviously ur prime source.

But Supreme Court knows more than you..Doesnt it . There was a thorough investigation that took place , the full knowledge of it being passed to the SC.

And please dont be in a denial mode that Conversion does not cause any resentment among the local population. I have seen it personally among the people of Kanyakumari,Madurai,Tuticorin districts of Tamil Nadu where 'harvesting the souls' is in full flow and that stupid man at helm 'Karunanidhi' does not care shyt about it.

See no one is justifying the burning of that man - but understand that what he did and what the evangelists continue to do caused/is causing resentment among the people

Laxmanananda had been working among the tribals of western Odisha for more than three decades .He was killed Maoists at the behest of some Christian missionaries.His death didn't make to the headlines of any big news channel.Though riots following his death was an international media event.l
