China urges India to stabilise ties for mutual benefit after BYD’s failed US$1 billion EV factory bid

  • Both countries should adhere to ‘strategic judgment’ that they pose no threat to each other, says top Beijing diplomat Wang Yi on Brics sidelines
  • Push comes in South Africa at meeting of emerging economies bloc that China and Russia favour expanding while India balks
Just days after India rejected Chinese carmaker BYD’s US$1 billion bid to set up an electric vehicle factory in the country citing security concerns, Beijing’s top diplomat urged New Delhi to stabilise bilateral ties for the benefit of both sides.

Wang Yi met with Ajit Doval, India’s national security adviser, on the sidelines of a gathering of Brics members in Johannesburg on Monday, calling for policies to “enhance strategic mutual trust” and “focus on consensus and cooperation”, a Chinese foreign ministry readout said.

Whether China and India support or exhaust each other will directly affect their respective development as well as the global landscape, Wang told Doval, adding that both countries should adhere to the “strategic judgment” that they pose no threat to each other and present opportunities for each other’s growth.

New Delhi has not yet issued its account of the conversation, but the Chinese readout said Doval acknowledged that “the destiny of the two sides is closely linked, and it is necessary to rebuild strategic mutual trust and seek common development”.

“The Indian side is willing to work with the Chinese side to find a fundamental way to resolve the border situation in the spirit of mutual understanding and mutual respect,” Doval said, according to the Chinese readout. Relations between the two neighbours have been particularly tense in recent years following a brawl in 2020 along their disputed border in the Kashmir region where at least 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers died.

Yet Beijing and New Delhi have kept up efforts at dialogue. Earlier this month Wang met with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on the margins of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting of East Asian foreign ministers in Jakarta.

During his meeting with Jaishankar, Wang urged India to meet “China halfway and find a solution to the border issue that is acceptable to both sides”.

The officials were weighing a coordinated security cooperation mechanism within the association comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The interest comes amid geopolitical security threats as the war in Ukraine stretches on and tensions play out in a prickly US-China relationship.

Brics economies now account for more than 31 per cent of global GDP, according to South Africa’s Brics ambassador, Anil Sooklal. The group’s development bank, established in 2014, seeks to promote the trading of its members’ currencies, aside from financing infrastructure and other development projects.

Brics has evolved from its founding purpose in 2006 of exploring investment opportunities, increasingly becoming a geopolitical force for multilateralism championing an alternative model to Western-led blocs.

On Monday, the national security advisers of Belarus, Burundi, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates took part in a “friends of Brics” discussion on cybersecurity and AI. Some 22 countries have formally applied to join Brics, said Sooklal. The meeting precedes a Brics leaders’ gathering slated for August to which 55 African nations have been invited and poised to be one of the largest-ever meetings of Global South leaders.

China and Russia support expanding Brics membership, but India, Brazil and South Africa are reportedly reluctant over fears of losing their influence.

Beijing was “highly concerned about India’s recent restrictive measures against Chinese companies, and hopes that India will provide Chinese companies with a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment”, Wang said in Jakarta. Senior Chinese diplomat Yang Jiechi was also expected to meet Doval in Johannesburg, where the national security advisers of Brics members were gathering on Monday and Tuesday this week.

New Delhi’s position is delicate, having recently agreed to deepen security and defence ties with Washington, which views Moscow and Beijing as its rivals. Several related deals materialized during a lavish state visit in the American capital that US President Joe Biden hosted for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Though Putin will not attend the next Brics summit in August, Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have confirmed their attendance. The two are expected to speak on the sidelines, with recent meetings involving the Asian countries’ high-ranking officials widely seen as groundwork for the leaders’ one-on-one dialogue.

Seems like China is changing it's tough stance vis a vis India. Pakistan will be thrown under the bus if this overture continues. Pakistan should protest with China otherwise the good old pom pom days will be long gone.

So India dosent want BYD electric vehicles?
Dosent make sense other than trying to lure Tesla to set up factory. Even then why would you want a monopoly?

America cleverly used Pakistan Army to destroy Pakistan.

Pakistan can now neither retaliate Indian terror attacks in pakistani cities, citing harm harm on US interests in India, nor can Pakistan count on China to complete go all in against India because of BRICS, SCO and business interests.

Its a tough situation.
IMO Pakistan should use all its energy to build up the nation quietly. Play the game China played througout all these years. Keep low and bide your time.

India is too large and getting bigger for Pakistan to catch up ever. Pakistan is screwed for next decade atleast with the economic malaise they are undergoing. By then India will be only third $10 trillion economy the world has ever seen. India, China and US will have their sphere of influence by then. Pakistan will bow down sooner or later.

Why would India encourage companies from a belligerent bully? India might be dependent on imports from China for now but we don't want to create further dependencies. BYD is not the only electric car vehicle in the world. We have some of our own like TATA. It will be China's loss for loosing out on a major market like India especially when Chinese companies are venturing out into the world. China will sooner or later compromise with India on border and settle for what it has, to gain the market access again. You can already see it from their tone lately.

Pakistan will probably have 300-400 million population in 20 years. That is by no means a small population.

Its hard to predict the future.
No one knew 20 years ago that USA wont be sole superpower anymore. No one could predict Soviet collapse.

My guess is that in 20-30 years there will be a new rising power that suprises many people.

Pakistan need urgent reforms. Small Island like Britain ruled half the world. America with a few hundred million inhabitants controlled the entire globe.

When numbers are against you, you have to be clever and opportunistic. Pakistan Army is the dumbest on earth. Having control of such a massive geostratetic location and huge population, they still couldnt manage to build a significant economy. All they seem to care about is petty stuff like having building plot and shops in shopping malls, earn enough to send their children abroad. Smallmindedness.

I am afraid Pakistan wont change until there is a major revolution, silent or bloody.

India is free to do as it wish.
Would China refuse India to set up factory in China? Even if India is occupying Chinese land according to chinese pov.

BYD is the leading electric vehicle manufacturer, not a small fish. Tata is nowhere near quality or tchnology of BYD.

The only reason India is doing this is to appease America, which is fine. But why does India then insist on still being part of SCO and BRICS.

if Pakistan cannot pay the bills for existing population it is not paying the bills for larger population

What exactly is geostrategic about Pakistan's location ?

World is lot interconnected and the days of invading are long gone. Today, if you attack a country, they have to be fully prepared for total annihilation especially with powers having nuclear weapons.

Today power has a different dynamics. It is projected through the economy, technology and soft power. The goal of that power is to improve the access of resources of the world for its own people's welfare. Larger the economy, larger such power. If you really want to defeat a country, defeat it economically today. None of the other South Asian countries have that capability vis a vis India.

India is already 5th largest economy, going to be 3rd largest soon. The world is heavily invested in the country's economy reflected in its stock market capitalization vis a vis its South Asian counterparts. This cannot be stopped now. World's economy will have 3 hubs with multiple spokes supporting them.

India is free to do as it wish.

BRICS? We are also the original founders of the grouping. SCO? It's because we want to have stake in power rich Central Asian economies. And why would we part with those groupings just because China is there?

You just watch the revolution that will be coming in EV's in India. Give it a decade.

Also appeasing America? India does everything in its self interest. We are not like a tiny Bangladesh to take dictates.

Thats the common wisdom in present situation. But i tend to disagree.

You can only achieve so and so with economic power. In the end the larger a economy gets, the more vulnerable its gets in certain aspects, which i wont name, but if you scroll history you may find clue what i mean.

Ok it seems like you can't take the reality of it and wanting to hide behind some history which you can't even quote. I understand your predicament. But we'll live to see the future and I can wait.

India imports $100 billion in Chinese products. The Chinese are free to setup factories for any of those products :D

I fully understand you.
I am not against Indian economy growing. Because ultimately it will bring stability in India and the neighborhood. Further strengthen the sub-continent and its standing the broader world in many way other ways, hopefully.

What i am saying is countries like Pakistan is hard to write off because of its geography, size and population. Bangladesh has its own twist as you know it also a 200 million strong population. The dynamics of subcontinent is very unique.

Keep dreaming that China will eventually appease you in the border issue like 1962. India should ban all Chinese investments in India, it's good for both countries.
