NEW DELHI: Mohammad Kamil , a 42-year-old non-resident Indian returning from Saudi Arabia, is in complete awe of the Metro Express that takes one from the New Delhi railway station to the international airport in just 20 minutes.

"I can't differentiate between Saudi Arabia and India right now. The speed, comfort and the time and money I save by using it - it's just fantastic value. With such developments, I feel proud to be an Indian," Kamil told IANS.

As more and more people get to use the new Metro line, they are loving the ambience, the speed, and its super efficiency. Proud residents say the Delhi Airport Metro Express will play a pivotal role in transforming Delhi into a world class city.

According to officials of the Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt Ltd (DAMEPL), around 7,000 travellers are using the service on a daily basis.

The airport express line commenced operations Feb 23 and is Delhi Metro's first public-private partnership project. Delhi Metro is responsible for the civil work and Reliance Infrastructure will operate the line for 30 years and share the revenues.

The 20-km journey takes 20 minutes and LCD screens display flight information inside the train coaches. The distance otherwise takes over an hour to cover by road.

"I took the Metro from the New Delhi railway station and it should have taken 20 minutes to reach here, but the journey was completed in just 19 minutes," said an amazed Nazir Iqbal, who had come to drop his sister at the airport.

According to Sharad Sahni, the new Metro line is a wonderful alternative to other modes of transport like taxis and uncomfortable auto-rickshaws.

"You have the luxury to travel air-conditioned at half the price of other public transport and minus the jams, heat and smoke," said the second-time traveller.

"The speed at which it is travelling - I read it is 105 km per hour - you get the feel of an aircraft and with the superb amenities at the stations, our air journey begins the minute we enter the Metro station!" Sahni added.

However, some travellers opined that the tickets could have been cheaper and direct baggage check-in from the station should be introduced as soon as possible. Officials say this will be possible in a few months. The travel from the New Delhi railway station to the airport costs Rs.80 and the full journey up to Dwarka Sector-21 costs Rs.100.

"The prices could be slashed a bit once the footfall increases," said Rakesh Bhoj , a businessman from Gujarat who visits the capital twice a month.

"I am travelling for the first time after reading about it in the newspapers and I must say I am very impressed," Bhoj told IANS.

"At present, this line is just perfect and I hope they don't spoil it by introducing the 'women reservation' coaches here too," Bhoj quipped.

A Reliance Infrastructure official said direct baggage check-in was likely to begin next week.

According to DAMEPL officials, the numbers are expected to grow further once the direct baggage check-in and the Dhaula Kuan and Delhi Aero city stations are opened soon.

With a combination of elevated, at-grade and underground lines in its 190 km network, the Delhi Metro has revolutionised the way people travel in congested Delhi since 2002. An economical, comfortable and efficient mode of travel, the Metro is used by 1.5 million people everyday. The city is much better connected within and also to neighbouring sub-urban towns like Noida and Gurgaon, with more places to be connected soon.
 
Yes..Its really world class..However fare is a little on higher side...
 
The travel from the New Delhi railway station to the airport costs Rs.80 thats over £1 in Uk Paisa bit pricey for India in my book should be Rs 50 Max

It will cost you around £4.50 to travel from central London to Heathrow airport. Still cheap I say, considering Delhi metro is much better.

Not only that, the same route can be covered by not so fast Blue line, Dwarka to Rajiv Chowk. That one still is just as cheap as it can get.
If the fare of Airport line is not prohibitive (which still is not), then everyone will prefer the Airport line, crowd it like Dwarka line, and Air Travel passengers will again have to resort to overcharging taxis.

Aren't these Chinese subway trains ??

I mean that China-made locomotives are very dangerous, and it undermines the dignity of Great-Indian-Super-Empire.
Indian people should refuse to use it.

You know what, I am yet to see the feasibility of the super-fast trains in China.
Let us hope they do not become nothing more than a symbol of irony.
China is developing no doubt, but do not behave like you own the world.
Indians marvel at management of utility, Chinese seem to take pride in luxury.

Since they both are developing nations... still a long way to go.
And quite a few out there are shorting China.

Not really

These trains were Built by Bombardier at its plant in Indian State of Gujrat

Chinese Built coaches were procured for Hyderabad and Mumbai Metro systems

I Dont think that u Know that Metro Projects are being carried out in 8 Indian cities and Bombardiers plant has a backlog of 800 Trains out of which some 500 are meant for Delhi alone , Hence it was decided to give contract for providing Trains for 2 cities to the chinese
 
Chinese Trains in Delhi? I don't think so. it is some OTHER City(cities) that they are trying Chinese Locos .

Broad gauge

The broad gauge rolling stock is manufactured by two major suppliers. For the Phase I, the rolling stock was supplied by a consortium of companies comprising Hyundai Rotem, Mitsubishi Corporation, and MELCO. The coaches were initially built in South Korea by ROTEM,[102] then in Bangalore by BEML through a technology transfer arrangement.[103] These trains consist of four 3.2-metre (10 ft) wide stainless steel lightweight coaches with vestibules permitting movement throughout their length and can carry up to 1500 passengers,[104] with 50 seated and 330 standing passengers per coach.[105] The coaches are fully air conditioned, equipped with automatic doors, microprocessor-controlled brakes and secondary air suspension,[106] and are capable of maintaining an average speed of 32 km/h (20 mph) over a distance of 1.1 km (0.68 mi).[105] The system is extensible up to eight coaches, and platforms have been designed accordingly.[104]

The rolling stock for Phase II is being supplied by Bombardier Transportation, which has received an order for 498 cars worth US$828 million.[107] While initial trains were made in Germany and Sweden, the remainder will be built at Bombardier's factory in Savli, near Vadodara.[108] These trains are a mix of four-car and six-car consists, capable of accommodating 1178 and 1792 commuters per train respectively. The coaches possess several improved features like Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras with eight-hour backup for added security, charging points in all coaches for cell phones and laptops, improved air conditioning to provide a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius even in packed conditions and heaters for winter.[109]

The standard gauge rolling stock is manufactured by BEML at its factory in Bangalore. The trains are four-car consists with a capacity of 1506 commuters per train,[110] accommodating 50 seated and 292 standing passengers in each coach.[105] These trains will have CCTV cameras in and outside the coaches, power supply connections inside coaches to charge mobiles and laptops, better humidity control, microprocessor-controlled disc brakes,[111] and will be capable of maintaining an average speed of 34 km/h (21 mph) over a distance of 1.1 km (0.68 mi).[105]
